WNBA, NBA owners unanimously approve return of Houston Comets

On Wednesday, the WNBA and NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale and relocation of the Connecticut Sun from the Mohegan Tribe to new owner Tilman J. Fertitta.

The deal was agreed to in late March, but it had yet to be formally voted on by other owners. The sale price is reportedly for $300 million, a record number for a WNBA team.

The team will relocate to Houston beginning with the 2027 season, the WNBA’s announcement confirms. The 2026 campaign (schedule) continues to feature Connecticut as the team’s home location.

Patrick Fertitta, alternate governor of the NBA’s Rockets, and Gretchen Sheirr, president of basketball operations with hte Rockets, will hold a press conference Thursday afternoon to further address the Comets’ return.

Houston native, ESPN personality, and two-time WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike will host the event. Former Comets and Hall of Famers Tina Thompson and coach Van Chancellor will be in attendance, as well as Houston Mayor John Whitmire and other members of the Fertitta family.

Rockets Wire will have on-site coverage, so stay tuned! The press conference will take place inside the team’s downtown arena of Toyota Center, which is where the Sun/Comets will play their home games in 2027 and beyond.

The previous iteration of the Houston Comets played from 1997 through 2008, a run which included the WNBA’s first four championships.
