Wolfgang Wood has stepped down as head coach of St. Bonaventure High's boys basketball team to take over at Cathedral Catholic High in San Diego. He led St. Bonaventure to three consecutive CIF-Southern Section finals from 2023 to 2025.
The coach who led the St. Bonaventure High boys basketball team to three straight CIF-Southern Section finals is on the move.
St. Bonaventure announced Thursday that head coach Wolfgang Wood had stepped down. The 32-year-old will be the new head coach at San Diego powerhouse Cathedral Catholic High beginning next season.
Wood led the Seraphs to CIF-SS championship appearances in 2023, 2024 and 2025 after taking over the program at just 26 years old in 2020.
St. Bonaventure was the last local program to be eliminated in the 2026 playoffs, making it to the Division 6 quarterfinals.
“I loved every moment of being here,” Wood told The Star. “Coaching here in Ventura, it’s a community. It’s a family, it’s a fraternity out here. I met a lot of great friends and coaches along the way. For me, that was the thing. It was great to be a part of that, and be a part of the county growing, in my opinion, to be a very good basketball area. I was just glad to be a part of that.”
The 2025 Tri-Valley League Coach of the Year finished 115-63 as head coach at St. Bonaventure. The Seraphs won three Tri-Valley League titles in Wood’s six seasons and were 18-7 in the playoffs. St. Bonaventure made to the CIF-State Regional final in the 2022-23 season, falling to Valencia.
Wolfgang Wood amassed a 115-63 record while leading St. Bonaventure to three CIF-SS finals in his six seasons as head coach.
“Thank you, Coach Wood, for your unwavering dedication to our team, our school, and our mission,” a St. Bonaventure Instagram post read. “Your leadership, passion, and commitment have made a lasting impact on our student-athletes both on and off the court. We are truly grateful for all you have given, and while you will be missed, we wish you and your family nothing but the best in your next adventure. Once a Seraph, always a Seraph.”
Wood grew up half-hour up the coast of his new program in Ladera Ranch. He played his high school basketball at Santa Margarita High before starring at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.
His mother, former UCLA center Tia Wood, was a two-time All-CIF player at Mira Mesa High. Wood’s father, Leon, was a standout at Saint Monica before playing in the NBA. He is a current NBA referee.
Wolfgang Wood left St. Bonaventure High to become the head coach at Cathedral Catholic High in San Diego.
Wood led the St. Bonaventure boys basketball team to CIF-Southern Section championship appearances in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Wolfgang Wood is 32 years old and began coaching at St. Bonaventure in 2020 when he was just 26.
Cathedral Catholic High is known as a powerhouse in San Diego basketball, making it an attractive opportunity for coaches.

Wood was an assistant at Newbury Park High, then at his alma mater, helping Santa Margarita win a CIF-SS Division 1 championship in 2019.
“There is a journey that everyone goes on, and when you get to my age and you start to have a family and get married, that journey leads you into other directions,” Wood said. “The stop of my journey here is done.”
Wood, who is also an assistant athletic director at St. Bonaventure, said he will stay on until the end of his contract on June 30.
“This is one of the best groups of parents and kids that I have had,” Wood said. “They have just been great.”
