Woonsocket's Patrick Munger dominated Exeter-West Greenwich, leading to a 6-0 shutout victory. The Villa Novans remain unbeaten with an 11-game winning streak in Division III baseball.
EXETER â Itâs hard to imagine Woonsocket surrendering its Division III baseball title with Patrick Munger dialed in as he was Tuesday evening.
Exeter-West Greenwich couldnât solve the senior right-hander through seven brilliant innings, managing a lone single off Mungerâs glove. His offense eventually did enough to keep the Villa Novans unbeaten and cruising through their league schedule.
Doubles by Joe Greenless and Jayden Piette provided all the support Munger required, as he fired a 6-0 shutout against the Scarlet Knights at Wawaloam School on April 28. Woonsocket departed with an 11-game winning streak to open the season and brushed aside the team that sat behind them in the standings entering the day.

Patrick Munger delivers for Woonsocket against Exeter-West Greenwich on Tuesday evening.
âWe actually played a full game today â probably one of the only ones weâve played so far this year,â Munger said. âIt felt good to come out here and actually compete.â
Munger struck out 11 and didnât allow an Exeter-West Greenwich runner to touch third base. He bought the offense some time after three scoreless innings against Scarlet Knights right-hander JJ Langlais, and the Villa Novans eventually took command in the top of the fourth. Two runs on wild pitches sandwiched an RBI double to left-center by Greenless, the key swing as Woonsocket built a 3-0 lead.
âOur team hitting at the plate today was good,â Munger said. âI trusted our guys, they trusted me and thatâs what helped us.â
The Villa Novans added on in the fifth thanks to some two-out production. They loaded the bases for Piette, and the young catcher helped his pitcher by sending a drive to deep left that landed at the base of the fence and knocked in a pair. It was a 5-0 cushion and Exeter-West Greenwich only had nine outs to manage a comeback.

âI just had to paint the corners and trust my catcher,â Munger said. âHe's been good back there. First year â he's been real good behind the plate.â
The Scarlet Knights (8-3) managed just two baserunners through the first four innings â a leadoff error in the second and a hit batsman with one out in the fourth. Another hit batsman leading off the fifth offered a glimmer of hope, and Gabe Zorawsk sent a sharp one-hopper back through the middle that caromed off Mungerâs glove and rolled toward the right side for a base hit. Munger induced a pair of routine flys to escape and set down the side in order in each of the last two frames.
âI knew it was going to be a tough challenge for me â probably my biggest challenge Iâve faced this year so far,â Munger said. âI just needed to come in here and do what I do.â
JJ Langlais looks for the fall as Woonsocket's Jullian DeJesus slides into second base in Tuesday game.
Woonsocket (11-0) suffered a lone loss to Exeter-West Greenwich in the regular season last year and another to Tiverton in the playoff Pod 1 finals. The Villa Novans won a winner-take-all game against the Tigers to reach the best-of-3 title series and swept Pawtucket Co-op to capture a championship. They have every intention of going back to Rhode Island College in five weeks and doing the same.
âWe knew last year we lost to them â they snapped our streak last year,â Munger said. âWe knew we had to get that back.â
