Jose Caballero may have a few more days to prove he's worth the starting shortstop job for the New York Yankees.

Except, it appears pre-determined that Anthony Volpe will take over the role when he returns from his rehab assignment.

Despite offensive struggles in recent seasons, the Yankees have remained confident in Volpe's abilities to be an above-average player on both sides of the ball. That includes manager Aaron Boone, who doesn't have a definitive answer for when he could return to the Majors.

"We'll see. It's Wednesday," Boone told MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "We've got this game, and he's playing in Somerset today. "We'll see."

After a nine-game road trip, New York returns home on Friday for a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Yankees' original plan, as relayed by general manager Brian Cashman, was to have Volpe take at least 55 at-bats in the minors before returning. Between nine combined games at Double-A and Triple-A, the former first-round pick has stepped up to the plate 30 times.
