Aaron Judge addressed the media after the Yankees' fifth consecutive loss, a 5-4 defeat to the Rays. The Yankees, once leading the AL East, are now tied for first place following a rough week, losing five out of six games.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. â Aaron Judge quietly walked to his locker stall after a post-game shower. He dressed quickly and then silently watched the media creep his way.
Following Sundayâs 5-4 loss to the Rays, the captain needed to address a terrible week of Yankees baseball.
They were just swept three games by the Rays at Tropicana Field. Theyâve lost five in a row. Theyâre 1-6 since starting the season 7-1.
In five days, a 3 1/2-game lead in the AL East has turned into a three-way tie with the Rays and Orioles.
Now what?
Judge wanted every Yankees player, himself included, doing a little soul searching before Monday nightâs game at Yankee Stadium against the Angels.
âIt starts with yourself,â he said. âYouâve got to look at individually yourself. âHey, what can I change? What can I do to put myself in a better position to help this team win?â
âThatâs what it comes down to. Donât try to do too much. Go out there and do your job and weâll be in a good spot.â
If youâve been watching the Yankees, you know why theyâre losing.
Most of their hitters are underachieving in stunning fashion, most everyone except Ben Rice, who is among the league leaders in average, homers and RBIs, plus Giancarlo Stanton, who only pinch-hit on Sunday.
Most hitters from the same lineup that led the league in runs scored and homers last season are off to terrible starts.
Aaron Booneâs Sunday lineup included Rice plus two players with no hits for the season, four others with averages below .160 and two batting under .250.
That led to no runs and one hit through six innings facing Rays starter Drew Rasmussen. A two-run seventh and Judgeâs homer with a man on in the ninth got the Yankees to within a run twice, but they still ended up four or fewer runs for the eighth time in 15 games.
Judge has been productive with four homers and nine RBIs, but heâs hitting .218 after winning a batting title last year when he was the AL MVP for the second season in a row and third time in four.
What is Judgeâs take on the offensive woes?
âWhew,â he said. âGuys are having some tough at-bats, but I think we just need to simplify some things at the plate. Weâre trying to hit every single pitch we see up there and kind of getting ourselves in some bad counts and bad situations.
âI think as a group if we simplify some things, simplify our approach a little bit, hunt the pitch that weâre looking for and kind of pass the baton, weâll get a better spot.â
Another area let the Yankees down over the weekend, the defense of the Raysâ six bunts, which resulted in three hits, an error, a fielderâs choice and one out.
âA lot of that is weâve got to make the play,â Judge said. âThatâs what it comes down to. If theyâre going to bunt and give you a free out, youâve got to come up and make a play.â
Judge was asked if heâs concerned.
âYeah, weâve lost some games, so Iâm concerned about that,â he said. âIâm not gonna sit here and talk about all the things that concern me. Weâve got a job to do and weâve got to focus on the positive things.
âThereâs things we need to clean up, obviously, but focus on the positive and get ready for the next series.â
The Yankeesâ pitching is their one big positive. The 2.78 team ERA is the lowest in the league, but thereâs little margin for error because the offense has been so bad so often.
âWeâre expected to go out there and put our team in the best position and when things arenât going your way, guys try to do a little extra,â Judge said. âWeâre gonna be in a good spot. Itâs been up and down year so far, but itâs still early.
âGuys are having great at-bats. We see a lot of bright things going on this season and weâre gonna change it.â
How soon the Yankees start scoring more runs consistently could determine where they finish in the standings. They learned that last season when the Blue Jays beat them out for the division title on a tiebreaker.
That led to the Yankees having to play a Wild Card Series with the Jays getting a bye, and then Toronto getting home-field advantage for a best-of-five Division Series it won in four.
âEvery game matters,â Judge said. âWe know that. Weâve talked about it every season. Weâll talk about every single month when we have tough losses like this. So itâs nothing new for us, but itâs baseball.
âWeâve just got to show up the next day and re-rite the ship. Youâve got to have a short memory and move on to the next one. Itâs tough, but that gameâs over with nothing and thereâs nothing we can do about it.â
