Itâs becoming increasingly frustrating to watch how the New York Yankees are handling Ben Rice, as itâs getting to a point where theyâre not consistently playing their best nine when heâs out of the lineup.
Rice has been one of the teamâs best hitters, and any game he doesnât start is going to draw attention to Aaron Boone and the decision-makers in the organization.
That doesnât mean Boone is always making the wrong decision, but thereâs little justification for sitting Rice against left-handed pitching. If development is part of the plan, then those are exactly the matchups where a young player should be getting opportunities.
Itâs encouraging to see more people starting to talk about it, including Yankees announcer Michael Kay, who pushed back on Booneâs previous stance that Rice isnât a platoon player.
âIs Rice a platoon player? And excuse my language, but Boone says, âHell no.â But when he doesnât start in four or five games against a lefthander, it kind of screams out platoon,â Kay said on his ESPN New York show, per NJ.com.
Part of the issue is due to how the Yankees are handling Paul Goldschmidt. Because of his presence on the roster, heâs naturally going to receive at-bats. While moving on from him would be unlikely given his track record and reputation, it does create a situation in which Riceâs playing time is affected despite his strong performance.
âSince he can only play one position, heâs going to replace Rice against left-handed pitching. So even though youâll deploy Rice off the bench later in the game when they go to a right-hander in the bullpen, youâre taking at-bats away from one of the best hitters in your lineup,â Kay explained.
âIf youâre using him in the fifth, thatâs two at-bats he didnât get at the beginning of the game. Youâre using him in the eighth, thatâs three to four at-bats that youâve left in the dugout with him,â Kay said. âI donât know how you solve this problem.â
Ben Rice is not consistently starting due to managerial decisions, despite being one of the team's best hitters.
Rice's absence from the lineup raises concerns about the Yankees not fielding their best team, potentially affecting their overall performance.
Aaron Boone's justification for sitting Rice against left-handed pitchers is unclear, as many believe young players should face such matchups for development.
