An Anthony Volpe choice looms for the New York Yankees.

They're pushing the deadline as far out as they can before making a roster decision.

Volpe is currently on rehab at Double-A Somerset, and his 20-day clock for the assignment runs through Sunday.

He'll either have to be activated to the MLB roster on Monday, or the Yankees will have to option him to the minor leagues, according to The Athletic's Chris Kirschner.

Volpe has yet to play in MLB this season as Jose Caballero has held down the Yankees' starting SS job.

This absence relates to Volpe's left (non-throwing) shoulder, which he initially hurt in May 2025, hurt again in September and had surgery on in October.

That shoulder is much more likely to impact Volpe at the plate rather than in the field, but the Yankees would clearly want it as healed as possible before re-inserting Volpe into the MLB lineup.

He's actually split his rehab assignment between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but he's with Somerset this weekend because they're closer to the Bronx at the moment.

Between 10 games at the two levels entering Friday, Volpe is 10-for-33 (.303) with nine singles and one home run. He has also stolen two bases.

Volpe has appeared in all 10 of those games at shortstop, so the Yankees clearly don't feel he has any limitations for playing the field.

It seems likely that Volpe will indeed join the major league club when his rehab clock expires, but the Yankees still have a few more days to decide that for sure.
