Aaron Boone presumably was waiting to see if the American Leagueās batting leader was good to go.
A few minutes later, the manager wrote out a lineup with Paul Goldschmidt at first base, Jasson Dominguez the designated hitter and Ben Rice still sidelined with a left-hand contusion.
It marked the third consecutive day Rice was sidelined with the injury, which occurred last Sunday when he misjudged a pickoff throw from Yankees left-hander Max Fried
Although the hand bruise is still preventing Rice from getting his regular swing off, the Yankees remain hopeful that this wonāt turn into a stint on the 10-day injured list.

āItās a little sore,ā Rice said on Monday. āI thought the throw (from Fried) was going to be a little lower than it was. I went down and thought it would be in the dirt, then it kind of stayed up in the end. I caught it poorly. It kind of hit in the palm.ā
Even more so than Yankees captain Aaron Judge, a three-time MVP, Rice has been carrying the offense. In addition to leading the AL with a .343 batting average through Tuesday, he was first in OPS (1.214), on-base percentage (.455) and slugging percentage (.759), second in homers (12), tied for fourth in RBI (27) and tied for 10th in walks (23).

āI remember the first spring training when he was first in big-league camp, and it was like, āThis guy can hit!ā Boone said. āThat was a couple years ago (in 2024). And then itās been steady improvement ever since.
āHe had some good moments for us (as a rookie) in ā24. He also had some real struggles for us. Last year was kind of a coming out party for him and I think he famously hit into some tough luck in and around a great season.ā
