Cam Schlittler is turning into an ace for the New York Yankees right before our eyes.
The right-hander lowered his season ERA to 1.51 after throwing six shutout innings in a 3-2 victory against the Texas Rangers last night in Arlington. He struck out eight and walked two.
Schlittler's opponent? Someone he grew up watching.
That would be two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom. deGrom's only blemish on the night was an RBI double to Cody Bellinger in the first that hit the top of the wall.
“He’s an elite guy, so it was really cool to go up against him,” Schlittler told MLB.com's Bryan Hoch about deGrom. “He’s one of the best pitchers of the last 10 years. He’s a fun guy to watch. It was a really cool experience to go up against him.”
Hoch points out that deGrom's trajectory to stardom is similar to Schlittler's. They are also both tall and slender hurlers who chuck 100 mph.

"Schlittler and deGrom were born 13 years apart in different parts of the country, but there are clear parallels: both late-blooming collegiate right-handers who enjoyed immediate success in the New York spotlight," Hoch wrote.
Who knows, one day down the road, a young starter may be voicing his admiration for Schlittler as he did for deGrom.
