ARLINGTON, Texas â Sitting behind a desk in the managerâs office five minutes after another Yankees win, this one a 4-2 series opener over the Rangers on Monday night, Aaron Boone talked about Max Friedâs six shutout innings as well as the left-handerâs âgreatâ and âuniqueâ pickoff move producing another out.
He talked about Ben Rice pulling off the near impossible with an opposite-field homer to left-center field at Globe Life Field and Aaron Judge coming up next and hitting a â1 to 12 breaking ballâ out to left for a âhold your beer moment.â
He talked about nervously watching from the visiting dugout when the Rangers were rallying in the ninth on David Bednar and thinking to himself, âHang on, baby, just hang on!â
And then Suzyn Waldman chimed in with a question thatâs been asked every day since last Friday in Houston, sometimes twice.
Any word on Giancarlo Stanton?
This time Boone had news to pass along:
âLow grade (right calf sprain). IL. It doesnât look too serious, but enough to not want to wait a couple more days. So weâll see what we have as the week unfolds.â
Stanton first felt calf tightness jogging from first to second base when Jazz Chisholm walked in the sixth inning of last Fridayâs 12-4 win in Houston. He left the game after slowly advancing to third base on a hit by , then sat out the last three games.

Stanton and the Yankees made a joint decision to get an MRI on Monday, and the low-grade strain diagnosis has the slugging DH on the 10-day injured list backdated to April 25.
The Yankees are hopeful that Stanton will be ready to play when heâs first eligible on May 5.
âYeah, it could be, but I donât want to put a timetable on it,â Boone said. âHopefully not too long, but weâll see.â
The Yankees probably will call a pitcher up from Triple-A on Tuesday to take Stantonâs roster spot, possibly reliever Yerry De los Santos.
They carried 14 position players and 12 pitchers Monday. Right-hander Luis Gil was optioned to Triple-A with a 6.05 ERA after his start on Sunday, then outfielder Jasson Dominguez was recalled from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday with a .326 average, 3 homers and 15 RBIs in 24 International League games.
Dominguez filled in at DH on Monday and was 1-for-4 in his season debut.
Stanton, 36, was off to a decent start with a .256 average, 3 homers, 14 RBIs and a .724 OPS in 24 games.
âHeâs a big force in the middle of our lineup, big RBI production, but Iâm hoping itâs a small (IL) stint,â Judge said. âI think he was able to catch it early, hopefully, and heâll be back out there.
âBut when you call up a guy like Jasson Dominguez, who can kind of fill that role, maybe DH, play some outfield for us, itâs going to be huge. Heâs been raking in Triple-A.
âHeâs a guy that I think was definitely upset not making the team out of camp. And I think he show up here ready to prove some people wrong and kind of send a message. Iâm excited about it.â
