The New York Yankees have no shortage of famous former players and plenty of those players have gone on to notable careers after their playing days ended.
In addition to the many television analysts who once wore pinstripes, several alumni now serve as big-league coaches and managers, including the Yankeesâ own skipper Aaron Boone.
And now a former Yankees player who enjoyed a legendary career as a first baseman in the Bronx has now made history with his own appointment at the helm of the Philadelphia Phillies following the sudden firing of Rob Thomson.ââ
âSo, just like that, we have the first father/son GM/manager in MLB history with Preston Mattingly as the Phillies GM and his dad, Don Mattingly, as manager,â USA Todayâs Bob Nightengale reported on Tuesday.
Mattingly played for 14 seasons with the Yankees, earning six All-Star nods, nine Gold Glove Awards, three Silver Slugger Awards and an MVP Award in his tenure. After he decided to join the Phillies as their new bench coach to start this season, he noted that the opportunity to work alongside his son Preston was a unique benefit.
And for the Philliesâ players, Mattinglyâs experience with the Yankees offered a nice complement to Thomson, who never reached the big-league level as a player.
âI mean, itâs Donnie Baseball,â Phillies franchise slugger Bryce Harper said of the news that Mattingly would be joining the coaching staff, according to The Philadelphia Inquirerâs Scott Lauber. âI grew up a Yankee fan, so knowing he played first base in the Bronx and had a great, storied career in the Bronx and was one of the best first basemen to ever do it, I have such a respect for him and the way he went about it.â
Now, after making so much history as one of the best first baseman to ever play, Mattingly is heading for a unique challenge as he makes history as the Philliesâ new manager. And with his new team facing some significant pressure to turn its season around and make a deep playoff run, itâs possible that Mattingly will come to regret joining a team where his son is, in a sense, his new boss.
âPreston Mattingly, GM of the Phillies, will now oversee his father serving as manager of the Phillies,â SNYâs Chelsea Janes wrote. âPlenty of reason to believe it all goes fine given track records of those involved, but thatâs a complicated situation if it doesnât.â
When a big-market team with high expectations flounders, itâs not uncommon for members of the front office and the coaching staff to butt heads. But as the first father-son duo to take on their respective responsibilities, the Mattinglys have introduced a new wrinkle into the equation that could bring some important cohesion, or complicate an already delicate balance.
