The New York Yankees went through their 2026 MLB offseason without making many major outside additions other than Ryan Weathers, and also saw a few key players leave in free agency.
They kept Cody Bellinger, but the New York Mets were able to sign both Luke Weaver and Devin Williams away from the Yankees. Initially, that looked like a massive mistake for the Yankees.
However, through the first month of the season, it might've been a blessing in disguise, as Weaver and Williams are struggling for the Mets this season so far.
ESPN's David Schoenfield called Williams the biggest disappointment in the bullpen: "This year, Williams has a 9.00 ERA, and his peripheral numbers are messier than a Queens auto body shop."
This season, Williams has a 9.00 ERA with -0.5 bWAR for the Mets. While he posted a 4.79 ERA in 67 games for the Yankees last year with an 86 ERA+, there was still optimism he could turn things around in 2026.
But things have gotten a lot worse. He has a brutal 46 ERA+ this season, and has allowed a 2.500 WHIP and is already at -0.5 bWAR, which is a big worse than his -0.3 bWAR last year for the Yankees.
The Yankees lost Devin Williams and Luke Weaver to the Mets during the 2026 MLB offseason as part of free agency moves.
Both Devin Williams and Luke Weaver are struggling in the early season with the Mets, which may benefit the Yankees.
Initially viewed as a significant loss, the struggles of Williams and Weaver may suggest that their departure was ultimately beneficial for the Yankees.

Weaver is going through some struggles of his own, posting a 4.91 ERA this season for the Mets.
Compared to his 3.62 ERA in 2025 with the Yankees, with 0.7 bWAR and a solid 114 ERA+, his 83 ERA+ and -0.1 bWAR is a brutal start for Weaver this season.
The initial reaction to losing both Williams and Weaver, especially to the same team in the rival Mets, was one of disappointment. But, based on their play, it's been a blessing in disguise for the Yankees to lose both.
