Wilson's final 2026 NFL mock draft: What I'm hearing with Round 1 one day away

Yankees players are advocating for the introduction of an alternate jersey, specifically the navy-blue batting practice jerseys, for road games. This would mark the first time in franchise history that the team would have an alternate uniform.
BOSTON â If Yankees players get their way, the team could add a new jersey to its classic rotation.
According to The Athleticâs Brendan Kuty, players have been urging the teamâs higher-ups to approve an alternate jersey for the first time in franchise history. Players recommended wearing a top that already exists for occasional road games: the clubâs navy-blue batting practice jerseys, which have âNew Yorkâ across the chest in gray letters and numbers, as well as a white trim and a sponsorship sleeve patch for Starr Insurance.
The Yankees only have two official jerseys, their classic pinstripes for home games and their road grays. Thatâs traditionally what the club has always worn â there have been infrequent exceptions â but other teams have expanded their wardrobes over the years. That hasnât gone unnoticed by Yankees players.
âThereâs a lot of tradition here,â Giancarlo Stanton said Wednesday at Fenway Park. âItâs the most iconic jersey there is in sports, pretty much. But that doesnât mean that, every once in a while, you canât change something up, especially on the road.
âEvery team has an alternate uniform. We have the uniform. Itâs not like we sat in a room and designed it ourselves. Itâs here. It always has been, so itâs not like weâre reinventing the wheel, necessarily.â
Stanton added that Yankees players have talked about wanting an alternate jersey âa lotâ for a few years, and that âa lot of people [on the team] would be okayâ with wearing the navy top, which can always be found in playersâ lockers on the road.
The motivation, he said, would be to mix things up every once in a while, and to keep up with what other teams are doing.
âItâs 2026,â Aaron Boone chimed in. âA lot of teams have a lot of different uniforms.â
Of course, critics of the idea would argue that the Yankeesâ traditionalism is part of their identity. However, adherence to past norms has eroded over the years. Examples include the Starr Insurance and Nike logos that appear on the clubâs current jerseys; last yearâs decision to amend the teamâs longstanding ban on facial hair; and the Yankeesâ recent âconcerted effortâ to pump âincessant, annoying, droning noiseâ into Yankee Stadium.
Yankees players are proposing to wear the navy-blue batting practice jerseys for road games.
Players believe that having an alternate jersey would allow for a change in uniform while still respecting the team's tradition.
The Yankees currently have two official jerseys: the classic pinstripes for home games and gray jerseys for road games.
The proposed alternate jerseys are navy-blue with 'New York' in gray letters and numbers, featuring a white trim and a sponsorship sleeve patch.

The Yankees have also worn black uniforms with nicknames on the back â they are the only team without names on the back of both their regular home and road jerseys â for MLBâs Players Weekend. And in 2024, the Yankees tinkered with their gray jerseys, removing white outlining and sleeve trim for a more vintage look at the behest of Aaron Judge.
On Tuesday, Judge initially did not want to comment about the possibility of wearing the navy top in games, stating, âI got nothing for you until it happens.â
But when asked about potentially bucking tradition, the captain noted, âIâm all about tradition, but we got a [sponsorship] patch on our sleeves.â
Judge also said the navy tops wouldnât be worn in the Bronx.
âI think weâll always wear the pinstripes at home,â he said. âI donât think thatâll change, but we changed our road jersey other years, so I guess if we wear the blues, we wear the blues on the road.â
Itâs unclear when the Yankees could start implementing their navy tops, or if they even will. Boone said he didnât know if anything was âimminent anyway,â and The Athletic reported that the jerseys havenât been approved for in-game use by MLB yet. Hal Steinbrenner would also have to sign off; Stanton wasnât sure if this conversation has made it to the Yankees owner yet.
âIt wouldnât be the end of the world. Itâs okay,â Stanton said, some sarcasm in his voice. âIâm sure if we were to do it and we play well, then itâs okay. If we donât play well, itâs because of the jersey.
âWe gotta play well regardless of what weâre wearing.â
While on the subject of fashion, Stanton said heâd also like to see the Yankees get a City Connect jersey. The Bombers are just one of two teams that donât have one.
The Athletics are the other, and thatâs because the former Oakland franchise is temporarily in Sacramento and eventually moving to Las Vegas.
âThey donât have a home,â Stanton joked.
But Stanton acknowledged that Nike isnât batting 1.000 on their City Connect creations. While some have become fan favorites, plenty have been duds over the years.
âThat oneâs touchy because I donât like a lot of the City Connects,â he said. âSo we canât do one that doesnât hit, thatâs for sure.â
For now, the navy tops are the safer, easier alternate that the Yankees seem to be craving. After all, theyâve already been manufactured and are in the possession of players.
âTheyâre always in our locker, but we donât wear them, so why not?â Stanton asked. âWhat are they made for? To see if the hanger works?â
