The New York Yankees are one of the best teams in Major League Baseball this season, with a 27-17 record that's just two games back of the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays.
While things are going well, there is one clear issue for the Yankees, and it's the offensive production of one very expensive hitter.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report called out Trent Grisham as the Yankees player who needs to break out ASAP this season. And this call-out was made for good reason: Grisham is beginning to look like fool's gold.
"... Grisham's 2025 breakout at the plate appears to have been fools' gold, back to a sub-.680 OPS for the fourth time in five seasons," Miller writes.
With the Yankees investing $22 million into Grisham after he accepted the qualifying offer, that costly mistake might come back to haunt the Yankees this season.
Trent Grisham is labeled as 'fools gold' due to his disappointing offensive production despite his high salary, raising concerns about his value to the team.
Trent Grisham's underwhelming performance could be seen as a $22 million mistake, potentially affecting the Yankees' financial decisions and roster strategy.
While the Yankees have a strong overall record, Grisham's offensive struggles stand out negatively compared to his teammates' contributions.

Calling Grisham's 2025 season "Fool's Gold" might be an appropriate descriptor of the production from the $22 million Yankees outfielder compared to last year.
In 2025, Grisham posted 3.5 bWAR with 34 homers and a .235 batting average with a .464 slugging percentage and .811 OPS. His 123 OPS+ was well above average.
This season, Grisham has 0.0 bWAR with six homers in 43 games (22 homer pace), with a .175 batting average, .365 slugging percentage, and a .676 OPS to go with an 89 OPS+.
Grisham's 2025 season looks to have been a total mirage, while his usual production, as seen for the bulk of his career, with OPS+ marks below 100, is what kind of hitter he's really like.
With Grisham's struggles, the decision to bring him back on such a massive contract is looking like a big mistake. Instead of Grisham, the Yankees could've been relying on a combination of Spencer Jones and Jasson Dominguez instead.
But, at least for the 2026 season, they're stuck with Grisham. And unless he can turn things around, that $22 million decision will look like a colossal mistake.
