BOSTON â A rest day Sunday and an off day Monday may have helped Giancarlo Stanton shake a weeklong slump â but playing at Fenway Park was probably the bigger reason.
A Fenway Park killer throughout his career, the Yankees' designated hitter victimized the Red Sox again in the opener of this weekâs three-game series, going 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and three RBIs in a 4-0 Yankees victory.
Entering the game in a 1-for-21 funk that featured nine strikeouts, Stanton started his night by leading off the Yankeesâ second inning with a 369-foot homer that sailed over the Green Monster and out of the ballpark for a 1-0 lead.
The Yankees made it 3-0 in the sixth inning when Stanton blasted a two-run double off the left-center field wall. In the eighth inning, he was robbed of extra bases when Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela made a leaping catch at the wall.
âItâs always a fun rivalry game (at Fenway), no matter where each team is in the standings,â Stanton said. âItâs just a good experience, a good pure baseball place to play, and youâve got to raise your game in those types of situations.â
The 2-for-4 showing left Stanton with a .316 average in 40 career games at Fenway. He has nine doubles, one triple, eight homers and 27 RBIs in 152 at-bats.
In the 32 ballparks in which Stanton has played at least 10 games, he only has better stats in San Franciscoâs A&T Park (.328, 11 HR, 24 RBI, 32 games) and the Rangersâ old stadium, The Ballpark in Arlington (.339, 4 homers, 11 RBI, 14 games).
For Wednesday nightâs Yankees versus Red Sox game, the over/under is set at 7.5 total runs on

Also on Tuesday, Stanton broke a hitless streak against left-handed pitching. He was 0-for-17 with four walks against lefties before going 2-for-3 with a homer and a double against Red Sox starter Connelly Early.
âJust some really good at-bats to get us going with a G-esque moonshot and then a big at-bat where he gets (to a) 3-2 (count) and then is able to get the big extra-base hit,â manager Aaron Boone said.
With the Double-A Somerset Patriots on the road this week, shortstop Anthony Volpe is continuing his rehab at Triple-A. He had a good showing in his first game Tuesday night.
Playing for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Volpe was 2-for-4 with a sixth-inning 378-foot homer, raising his five-game average to .400.
This will be a busy week for Volpe, who is close to returning from offseason left labrum surgery.
âI think heâs playing either two or three in a row,â Boone said. âHe should get in about five games this week.â
Unless thereâs an injury, someone on the Yankeesâ four-man bench has to go when Volpe returns.
Because J.C. Escarra likely will remain the No. 2 catcher for the time being, extra outfielder Randal Grichuk could be the one to lose his spot on the roster.
The Yankeesâ only other bench players are two reserves whom Boone treasures: first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and infielder Amed Rosario.
After a slow start, Grichuk is heating up at the plate. He had his best showing on Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with an RBI single. A right-handed hitter who hits lefties well, Grichuk is 4-for-11 in his last four games after beginning the season 0-for-13.
Playing sparingly hasnât been an easy adjustment for Grichuk, who has hit 19 or more homers in six of his first 12 seasons.
âItâs tough, but itâs the role that Iâm in and I understand that,â Grichuk said.
Triple-A outfielder Jasson Dominguez was the hitting star in Scrantonâs 7-1 win, with two doubles and a solo homer in four at-bats.
For the season, Dominguez is ninth in the International League in hitting with a .333 average. The switch-hitter also has three homers, 11 RBIs, 12 walks and eight steals in 19 games.
The Yankees have to be excited that Dominguez is off to a great start in the minors after being a big leaguer in 2025, but he probably needs at least one and maybe two injuries for a call-up.
The Yankeesâ two rehabbing aces are headed to High-A Hudson Valley for starts this week.
Gerrit Cole will make his second start on Thursday, and then Carlos Rodon will begin a rehab assignment with his first start on Friday.
Cole is rehabbing from a March 2025 Tommy John surgery, while Rodon had offseason arthroscopic surgery and then was slowed by hamstring tightness in late March.
ROTATION DECISIONS COMING
Two starters will lose their rotation spots when Cole and Rodon return.
Before Tuesday, righty Luis Gil seemed the likeliest, but the Yankeesâ decision got tougher when the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year held the Red Sox to two hits over 6 1/3 scoreless innings. The rightyâs fastball velocity dropped from the high 90s to the mid-90s on a very cold night at Fenway, but he retired 18 of 24 batters while striking out two, walking three and hitting a batter.
After lowering his ERA from 7.00 to 4.11, Gil said he hasnât been wondering how the Yankeesâ rotation will shake out.
âTo be honest, not at all,â he said. âMy focus is to execute pitches ⊠and then at the end let them figure it out.â
