Jazz Chisholm hit a home run but later took a hit to the jaw during the Yankees' 4-2 victory over the Rangers. Anthony Volpe's potential return is also being discussed.
ARLINGTON, Texas â Jazz Chisholm had a lot of fun Monday night, especially when he homered in the fourth inning off Rangers starter Jack Leiter.
Thatâs when the Yankees' flamboyant second baseman broke into a slow, showboating trot around the bases. Like his first two homers of the season, both in the last week, he raised his arms, pointed to opponents and crossed home plate pretending like heâs an option quarterback faking a handoff.
Itâs entertaining if youâre a Yankees fan ... and probably hated by everyone else.
Chisholmâs night turned painful right before he was on the receiving end of a flip from shortstop Jose Caballero on a fielderâs choice that was the final out in a 4-2 Yanks win over the Rangers.
For Tuesdayâs game versus the Rangers, Yankees -1.5 run line is currently set at +150 on BetMGM. Our comprehensive BetMGM Sportsbook review provides a guide on how to navigate their app.
With two outs and a runner on first, Josh Smith hit a 99.6 mph groundball right at Chisholm, who got his glove down to make the play before it took a bad hop on the hard Glove Life Field turf.
When the ball shot up off Chisholmâs face, Smith reached first base and the official scorer ruled it an E-4.
After the game, Chisholm returned from a post-game shower to his locker wrapped in a towel while holding a large icepack up to his face.

âHit me right in the jaw,â he mumbled to NJ.com. âThis turf is hard as a rock. It almost Fâd me up.â
Chisholm said heâd be âall right,â but it was a scare ... a painful one.
Three days after hurting his right calf jogging from first to second base on a walk last Friday in Houston, Giancarlo Stanton underwent an IL on Monday that has the slugger on the 10-day injured list with a low-grade strain.
With Stantonâs IL stint backdated three days, heâs eligible to return a week from Wednesday.
Is that possible?
Stanton is expected to do an interview before Tuesday nightâs game to address his 10th trip to the injured list in nine seasons with the Yankees.
The Yankees appear to be targeting a Friday return for shortstop Anthony Volpe, who began the season on the injured list as he finished up his rehab from offseason left labrum surgery.
After playing eight rehab games in the last two weeks, Volpe is scheduled for two more on Tuesday and Wednesday nights with the Double-A Somerset Patriots.
Thatâs all the Yankees have announced, though the timing suggests a Friday activation is likely. Thursday is an off day.
âWe have not made a decision on that,â manager Aaron Boone said Monday.
Volpe, who played four games with Somerset and then four with Triple-A Scranton/WilkesâBarre, is batting .308 with 1 homer, 3 RBIs, 7 strikeouts and 1 walk in 27 plate appearances.
After consecutive hitless games, Volpe was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs on Sunday in the opener of Scrantonâs doubleheader with Rochester. Volpe had off on Monday, a rest day for minor league baseball.
Close to returning from arm surgeries, Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon will get an extra day of rest before making a rehab start with Somerset this week, five days instead of four.
Coleâs third rehab start will be Wednesday night, Rodonâs second will be Thursday.
Boone stated last week that Rodon is ahead of Cole, but the left-hander will not be in play to come off the IL and make his season debut next Tuesday. The Yankees have to add a starting pitcher by then after optioning right-hander Luis Gil after Sundayâs game and filling the roster spot for a position player, outfielder Jasson Dominguez.
The guess is Cole makes three more starts before returning from his March 2025 Tommy John surgery and Rodon gets two more.
Rodon threw 65 pitches in his first start, 4 1/3 scoreless innings for High-A Hudson Valley last Friday night. Heâll probably be stretched out close to 80 if he gets two more tuneups.
Coleâs pitch count was 52 in his last outing, 2 runs (1 earned) over 4 1/3 innings last Thursday with Hudson Valley.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre infielder Paul DeJong has an April 30 opt out in his minor-league contract with the Yankees that he plans to use if heâs not promoted from Triple-A this week, the New York Post reported.
DeJong, 32, wonât be promoted. If the Yankees have a sudden need for an infielder, the non-roster player surely would be passed over for a call-up by one of two players who hold 40-man roster spots, Max Schuemann or Oswaldo Cabrera.
An All-Star shortstop with the Cardinals in 2019, DeJong is hitting .213 with 6 homers and 13 RBIs in 22 Triple-A games. Heâs made 10 starts at third base, 5 at shortstop, 3 at second base and 3 at DH.
