“Gerrit Cole still has a ways to go before he'll be back on a Major League mound. But he is inching closer to his much-anticipated return. Cole, on the road back from March 2025 Tommy John surgery, made his second rehab appearance on Thursday night with High-A Hudson Valley,” MLB.com’s Shanthi Sepe-Chepuru wrote.
With Cole and others sidelined, opportunities have opened up for different arms to step up. Recently, Cam Schlittler delivered an impressive outing against the Boston Red Sox, showing he could be a key contributor.

“Severino hasn't been great so far this season. He has a 6.20 ERA in five starts. But, he has a 3.97 career ERA. The Athletics have been good as well, but that has been the case despite Severino struggling,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.
Severino has enjoyed success throughout his career, including a top-three finish in Cy Young voting and being named a Gold Glove finalist. The right-hander is also a two-time All-Star, highlighting his upside.
Severino is currently on a $67 million contract with the Oakland Athletics, but the Yankees have the financial flexibility to take on that deal. Pairing Severino with Cole could form a dangerous duo come October.
