Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole made a rehab start, allowing two runs in 4 1/3 innings. Carlos Rodon is set to make his first rehab start, while Anthony Volpe continues playing with the Triple-A RailRiders.
BOSTON â Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole drove up to Wappingers Falls, N.Y., on Thursday night to make a rehab start for the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades and Carlos Rodon will be there doing the same on Friday night.
Cole allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings in his second rehab start after Tommy John surgery while Rodon will be making his first since an offseason elbow procedure and April hamstring tweak.
About 110 miles to the east, Anthony Volpe will be back in Moosic, Pa., on Friday night playing shortstop with the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for the third time this week.
Whatâs next for all three?
Volpe, who had offseason left shoulder labrum surgery, will be the first to return.
Heâs scheduled to play nine innings for Scranton on Friday, nine more on Saturday and then DH on Sunday. That will push his rehab plate appearances to more than 30 over nine games including four appearances last week with Somerset. Heâs hit well so far, batting .333 with a homer and two stolen bases.
âHeâs getting close,â manager Aaron Boone said before Thursday nightâs 4-2 Yankees win over the Red Sox.
For Fridayâs Yankees versus Astros series opener, the over/under is sitting at 9 total runs on DraftKings. Our complete DraftKings Sportsbook review shows you how to register and navigate their app.
Could Volpe fly to Texas to play in next weekâs series against the Rangers, which runs Monday through Wednesday?

âI donât know,â Boone said. âWeâll see. As this weekend unfolds, weâll get a better idea.â
Boone also indicated that Rodon likely will be back in the Yankeesâ rotation before Cole.
When Boone was asked if he knows how many more rehab starts Cole will make, he responded, âNo, but I anticipate Carlos being closer though. Itâs still at least a few more (for Cole), I think.â
Rehab assignments for pitchers can last 30 days. Coleâs started April 17 when he allowed three runs over 4 1/3 innings in a start with the Double-A Patriots, so itâs possible he could make four more starts on April 28, May 3, May 8 and May 13.
That could have Cole making his season debut for the Yankees against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on May 18, if he keeps pitching with four days rest.
Rodon likely will make two more rehab starts next week, then possibly rejoin the Yankees to pitch on Sunday, May 10 in Milwaukee or Monday the 11th in Baltimore.
Cole was upbeat after his 52-pitch start on Thursday.
âI felt good,â he said in a post-outing interview. âI got into the fifth again. I threw all my pitches. So it was a good night.â
Cole started his outing with three scoreless innings, then allowed a solo homer in the fourth to Mets first baseman prospect Corey Collins when throwing four changeups in a row âto work on it,â and another run scored in the fifth on a double, passed ball and sacrifice fly.
âI wanted to make sure I got some fastballs down,â he said. âI struggled a little bit with that in Somerset. For the most part we did. I executed the down and away quadrant. Ironically, I gave up three hits on that pitch, but I put it where I wanted to.
âThe curveball stayed really sharp. I had a couple opportunity to change speeds with it. The changeup was poor and the slider probably overall was poor, too.â
