HOUSTON â Now churning like a hurricane through the AL, the first-place Yankees won their eighth straight game Saturday night.
And this Yankee run had a hand in the utter chaos happening in Boston.
Moments before the Yankeesâ first pitch at Daikin Park, on the way to an 8-3 victory against the stumbling Astros, news about the Red Sox reached Aaron Boone.
âI wasnât sure if it was true initially,ââ the Yankees manager said of hearing that Boston manager Alex Cora and several coaches had been let go.
âI had heard whispers of it as we were walking out (to the field),ââ said Boone. âSo, yeah, certainly surprising and probably caught us off guard.ââ
Two nights prior, the Yankees completed a three-game sweep of their ancient rivals at Fenway Park, limiting the Red Sox to three runs in 27 innings and leaving them in the AL East basement.
Boone and Cora have been good friends since their ESPN analyst days, and âI have a feeling heâll do whatever he wants,ââ Boone said of a manager with a world championship pedigree.
âHeâs a great manager, smart, talented person that Iâm sure will have a lot of opportunities available to him,ââ said Boone, who was âvery shockedââ by Coraâs dismissal.
More than anything last week, the Yanks exposed more cracks in the Red Soxâs roster design, with a pedestrian offense and a pitching staff trying to stay afloat due to injuries.
Alex Cora and several coaches were let go amid the team's struggles, although specific reasons for their dismissal were not detailed.
The Yankees have won eight straight games, solidifying their position at the top of the AL.
The Yankees defeated the Astros with a score of 8-3.
The turmoil within the Red Sox organization may further strengthen the Yankees' position in the AL as they continue their winning streak.

After the game, the Yankees still hadnât decided on Giancarlo Stantonâs status.
Unavailable on Saturday due to tightness in his right calf, Stanton remained a candidate for the injured list.
From the bench, Stanton watched every Yankee in Saturdayâs lineup reach safely, with 12 hits â three of them solo homers â and 10 walks against Houston pitching.
âPatience was the difference tonight,ââ said Boone. âReally good at-bats, deep counts.ââ
And there was Austin Wells, whose two RBI on Saturday matched his seasonal total entering the game.
Leading off what would be a three-run seventh inning, Wellsâ second homer of the year broke a 2-2 tie and validated what had been a series of better at-bats with nothing much to show.
âJust trying to keep it simple, swing at strikes and take balls,ââ said Wells, who was 4-for-28 with four singles â but nine walks â since his last extra-base hit, a homer on April 11.
âI think it (reflects on) how Iâve been getting pitched, a little bit how I was getting pitched last year,ââ Wells said of those walks as a harbinger for better results.
âI donât know how itâs going to correlate directly into hitting the ball, but being in the zone for meââ is the key.

Wells also caught Ryan Weathers' first start as a new father, pitching into the sixth, and at one point retiring 11 straight Astros - three days after the birth of his son.
"It's been crazy,'' Weathers said of his week, which included an early-morning Wednesday call, in Boston, that his wife had gone into labor.
Weathers said he arrived at the hospital at 9:47 a.m., and his wife gave birth at 10:04 a.m.
A day later, Weathers threw a bullpen at Yankee Stadium ahead of his regularly scheduled start (the baby arrived three days earlier than expected).
"It's still my job,'' said Weathers. "I still have to perform.''

Jose Caballeroâs power and baserunning abandon was on full display, with a solo homer, a stolen base â and being twice caught stealing third.
âIf he gets his steal of third locked down, it wouldâve been a Rickey-like night,ââ said Boone, who was OK with Caballero trying to swipe third on his own, in the seventh, with a lefty-hitting Ben Rice (3-for-4, sac fly) up and Aaron Judge on deck in a 3-2 game.
âYouâre going to take as many extra-bases as he is, youâre going to get caught sometimes,ââ said Boone, who then watched Rice single ahead of three straight walks for a 5-2 lead.
âYou know the guy behind you is going to do the job. We trust one another,ââ said Caballero. âIt keeps the game simple for us.ââ
Caballero has also markedly improved his shortstop defense, while flashing a strong arm, with Anthony Volpe perhaps days away from being reinstated from his rehab assignment.
