The New York Yankees are only getting healthier on the mound, and after some disappointing showings over the past few weeks, that's a very promising sign. The Yankees need to get better on the mound, despite this rotation and bullpen still being rather decent, at least on paper.
We also saw what the Yankees can do on the mound over the first few weeks of the season, and though that might have been an outlier, it's still in them to go out and do this. With Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole returning, it's scary to think about how good the Yankees can be on that front.
However, when both return, despite their different times, the Yankees will have to decide what to do with their pitching staff. Some have questioned who the two odd men out will be, while it seems very likely that Ryan Weathers will be at least one of them. As for who the other player might be, it doesn't seem like Will Warren is going to be the one who loses his job.
"It may be a few weeks before the return of lefty Carlos Rodón to the New York Yankees’ rotation, and ace Gerrit Cole should not be far behind. When they arrive, the Yankees will have to kick two of their current starters to the bullpen or to Triple A. If Will Warren keeps up anything close to what he did Saturday, he won’t have much to worry about.
“Weathers and Gil are Warren’s main competitors to remain in the rotation when Cole and Rodón return. Max Fried and Cam Schlittler will keep their spots. Warren also has the added advantage of having proven durable after making 33 starts (4.44 ERA) last year, tying for the most in the American League," Brendan Kuty of The Athletic wrote.
Will Warren is expected to retain his position due to his recent performance and the team's need for stability in the rotation as Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole return.
The return of Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole is expected to strengthen the Yankees' pitching staff, creating competition for the remaining spots in the rotation.
Ryan Weathers is anticipated to be one of the odd men out, while Will Warren is likely to secure his place in the rotation.

Right now, Warren certainly deserves to be the fifth starter in the star-studded Yankees' rotation. Luis Gil is obviously a decent arm and somebody who has found success at other parts of his career, but Warren is simply a better starter right now. For Weathers, there isn't much to talk about here, as the left-hander hasn't done enough in New York to justify keeping a spot.
