Mumbai Indians scored 243 runs with Ryan Rickelton's 123 not out but lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets. Sunrisers chased down the target in just 18.4 overs, led by Travis Head's explosive 76 runs.
MUMBAI: On a bowlersâ graveyard at the Wankhede stadium in IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians are seeing their chances of making it to the playoffs buried for good. Almost.
For a while, when they raced away to 243 for five riding on opener Ryan Rickeltonâs blistering 123 not out off just 55 balls on Wednesday night, MI wouldâve hoped to stop the juggernaut of Sunrisers Hyderabad and score a win that wouldâve kept them alive in the tournament.

However, that still couldnât prevent them from going down by six wickets, as a rampaging Sunrisersâ batting line-up, which chased down the target in just 18.4 overs.
Exploding in signature style, âTravi-Shek' provided a perfect start to chase down the 244-run target. Dropped a couple times by Naman Dhir (at deep point, and then at point), Travis Head, shaking off his below-par form, smashed his first half-century (76, 30b, 4x4, 8x6) of the season. With Abhishek Sharma (45 off 24 balls, 4x4, 3x6) firing away at will too, the deadly left-handed added 129 in merely 52 balls for the opening wicket.
A twin strike by spinner Allah Ghazanfar in the ninth over, that saw the in-form Ishan Kishan chop a ball onto his stumps for a rare first-ball duck, and Head out too soon after, brought MI back in the match for a brief period.
However, using his blade like a sledgehammer, Heinrich Klaasen blasted 65 not out off just 30 balls, in an inning which included seven fours and four sixes, to take SRH home comfortably. Taking over complete charge of the chase, Klaasen added 80 in 40 balls for the fourth wicket with allrounder Nitish Reddy (21 off 17 balls), and then 36* in just 14 balls for the fifth wicket with Salil Arora (30 not out, 10b, 2x4, 3x6) to help the Sunrisers to their fifth win on the trot.
Placed third on the table, SRH, who scored their sixth win overall, thus enhanced their playoff chances. On the other hand, languishing at the ninth spot MI are now almost out of it.
Looking far, far below his best, MIâs premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah not only finished wicketless, but ended up conceding 54 in four overs, with even 23-year-old Salil Arora carting him for a six in his last over. Bumrah has now taken just two wickets in eight matches in IPL 2026. Ghazanfar finished with two for 51 in four overs, while Trent Boult conceded 1-41 in four overs, and Ashwani Kumar went for 41 in two overs. Curiously, MI didnât give a single over to allrounder Shardul Thakur, despite bringing him on as an âImpact Player.â
Ryan Rickelton scored an impressive 123 not out off 55 balls for Mumbai Indians.
Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down the target of 244 runs in just 18.4 overs, scoring 245 for 4.
The loss significantly diminishes Mumbai Indians' chances of making it to the playoffs in IPL 2026.
Travis Head, with 76 runs, and Abhishek Sharma, who scored 45 runs, were key players for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In a bid to stop the Head-Abhishek onslaught, MI introduced Ashwani Kumar in the seventh over, but the left-arm pacer conceded 23 runs in it, as Head took him to the cleaners.
Earlier, returning to the XI after replacing the injured Quinton de Kock at the last minute, Ryan Rickelton unleashed a blistering 44-ball century - the fastest-ever for MI. Rickeltonâs scintillating knock of 123 not out (55b, 10x4, 8x6), which has torn the record books and could inspire their much-awaited turnaround, is now the highest individual score for MI in the history of the IPL - the previous best being Sanath Jayasuriyaâs 114 not out off 48 balls against CSK at the Wankhede on May 14, 2008.

Ricketonâs blazing innings and sparkling cameos by skipper Hardik Pandya (31 off 15 balls, 2x4, 2x6) and English allrounder Will Jacks (46 off 22 balls, 5x4, 3x6), who was playing his first game of IPL 2026 after arriving late for the tournament, gave MI a good total to defend.
In a high-scoring match, Lankan pacer Eshan Malinga conceded just 1-29 in four overs and thus played a vital part in SRHâs win.
