The Magpies conceded twice in the opening 15 minutes at Goodison Park but drew themselves level after 90 minutes as Daniel Hynd halved the deficit before Nathaniel Waldock, who missed a penalty in the first-half, converted a successful spot-kick in the final minute of normal time.

In the first half of extra-time, Calvin Barker proved the match winner as the teenager's impressive half-volley from 20 yards completed a heroic comeback to win the trophy.

Newcastle's youngsters also beat the likes of Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa in the knockout stages of the competition before prevailing in their five-goal thriller against Everton.

Gregg Ryder, Newcastle United U14 Lead Coach, said: "The staff and players did everyone proud today. To come from two goals down and show that level of belief and resilience was outstanding.

"Being 2-0 down after 15 minutes could have knocked them but the way they regrouped, stuck together and started to play their game says everything about this group. To take the game to extra time and then find a winner is a brilliant achievement.

"The whole experience will hopefully put the lads in good stead for the future. Exposing them to playing at a top stadium in a pressured environment can only help them moving forward.

"This competition, as a whole, brings together some of the strongest academies in the country and to emerge as winners is testament of the hard work that goes on across every department at the Academy.

"The boys gave absolutely everything in every minute of every game. It's a day everyone connected to the Academy and the club can be hugely proud of."
