Zack Ostrander won the Knoxville Marathon with a time of 2:40:12, while Molly Holmes claimed victory in the women's race, finishing in 2:55:44. The event featured multiple lead changes in the women's category.
Zack Ostrander wins Knoxville Marathon, Molly Holmes is women's winner
Molly Holmes, who helps train athletes at the University of Tennessee, won the women's race at the 22nd annual Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon on April 12.
Holmes covered the 26.2-mile downtown course in 2 hours, 55 minutes, 44 seconds. Zack Ostrander was the overall winner in 2:40:12.
It was a back-and-forth finish in the women's race, with at least four lead changes after the halfway point.
Holmes was hired by UT's Sports Medicine Staff in July as an intern athletic trainer for cross country and track.
She has a masters in athletic training from Northern Arizona and a bachelors in public health from the University of Washington. She worked previously with athletes at Washington and Phoenix high schools.
Gina Rous, 46, of Knoxville was second in 3:02:58 followed by Julia Ray, 20, of Knoxville in 3:05:14. Holmes passed Ray for the lead.
Ostrander, a 19-year-old from Smyrna, ran the race with headphones.
In an interview with WATE, Ostrander said he started by listening to "white girl pop" followed by Bryan Adams and at Mile 23 switched to worship music.
Elliot Wunder, 24, of North Charleston, South Carolina, was second in 2:43:45. Blaine Metcalf, 26, of Powell was third in 2:47:29.
Curtis Eckstein, 27, of Batesville, Indiana, who ran cross country and track at Purdue, won the men's half marathon in 1:08:21. Jonah Bird, 26, of Knoxville was second in 1:10:58.
Caroline Houser, 37, of Knoxville won the women's half marathon in 1:25:36. Kate Robinson, 20, of Knoxville was second in 1:28.
Mason Shell, 14, of Maryville won the men's 5K on April 11 in 17:29.
Bella Courtney, 15, of Knoxville was the women's winner in 20:05. Kathy Wolski of Knoxville was third in 20:40. The 46-year-old Wolski won the women's marathon last year for a record fifth time.
