The lights were bright at the Santiago Bernabeu as Real Madrid took on old European rivals, Bayern Munich in the first of a titanic two-legged affair. The Bavarians were quickest out the blocks and hemmed in the nervy Merengues for a good 10 minutes before a release gave a moment to exhale for the Bernabeu faithful. Real Madrid began to grow into the game with more intensity and desire. They were not out there to survive but to win against the odds. They game ended 2-1 to Die Roten as Bayern finally got over the line for the first time in 9 meetings against the men in white. A Vinicius Jr giveaway gave Bayern the opportunity to craft a well-worked goal to open the scoring. Harry Kane would make it 2-0 at the start of the second half. Kylian Mbappe finally got his goal following a low cross to the back post by Trent to make it 2-1. Manuel Neuer appeared rather busy despite his side being in the ascendency for significant parts of the game. It’s all to play for in Munich.

The Line-Up

No line-up guarantees a victory in such a difficult tie. The manager has to give himself and his team the best chance to compete and win and that means aiming for some sustainable balance as well as a plan B if changes need to be made. Big call. Fede’s return to the XI was always going to be a confidence booster. The midfield 4 of Arda, Tchouaméni, Thiago and Fede have shown great chemistry on previous occasions, this, however, would be their biggest test yet. The midfield 4 worked tirelessly against a fluid and dangerous Bayern Munich, helping out in defence, putting pressure on the ball and creating opportunities for the front 2.

Arbeloa

Arbeloa showed bravery and good conscience in leaving Jude Bellingham on the bench. It’s always risky because everyone’s a critic. The tactical approach was good and against a really good side, Arbeloa’s men sunk their teeth in. It’s not the result Real Madrid would have wanted but there’s a weakness in the Bayern side for Real Madrid to exploit. There was not much Arbeloa could do about Neuer, Olise and Trent Alexander-Arnold. It’s not yet over but a monumental task awaits at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Kylian Mbappe

The biggest game of the season so far. Elite opposition in the elite competition on the biggest stage. Kylian Mbappe showed up and he huffed and puffed, eventually getting a goal at the back post. It wasn’t enough to give Real Madrid a result but his movement was electric and he carried a threat for Los Blancos on a night when they really needed it. He has given himself and Real Madrid a chance to try again in the return leg.

Fede El Capitan Valverde

Fede Valverde has shown glimpses of that Captain’s spirit in recent games. He’s no longer that kid who just runs and works hard. He’s the captain. A reference. That’s a lot of weight at any club but at Real Madrid it casts an even bigger shadow. You’re following the likes of Modric, Ramos, Casillas, Hierro, Redondo among the greats. Fede’s impressive form continued as he managed to affect the game on both ends of the pitch with his movement and work rate. He’s proper captain. The game was difficult but Fede kept going and will need to do the same in the return game if Real Madrid are to have any chance of upsetting the odds.

Huijsen Order

Dean Huijsen’s talent was on full display against elite opposition and while they young centre-half has a ways to go in his maturing, he really stood up on a difficult night. Carreras was torched endlessly by the magic of Michael Olise often leaving Huijsen and Rudiger exposed. Huijsen finally looked like a Real Madrid centre-half. This is a game where Real Madrid should have exploited his ball-playing qualities a bit more and they might do in the return leg.
