Cori Close has secured her first recruit from the transfer portal, with Bonnie Deas committing to the UCLA Bruins. Deas, a former Arkansas Razorback, averaged 10.2 points and 9.0 rebounds in her freshman season.
The defending national champions added their first commitment of this yearâs transfer portal on Thursday with former Arkansas Razorback Bonnie Deas committing to Cori Close and the UCLA Bruins according to On3 Sports.
Deas is coming off of a very strong freshman season in the SEC, putting up 10.2 points and 9.0 rebounds. Donât let the rebounding total fool you, Deas is a 5â9â guard but sheâs shown a clear knack for tracking down rebounds in her short college career.
Will Deas go straight into UCLAâs starting lineup? Itâs certainly a possibility, UCLA currently has just one guard on their roster. Christina Karamouzi just wrapped up her freshman season, having played in 26 games and scoring 0.5 points per game.
UCLA's roster is starting at nearly an entirely clean slate. The Bruins lost six seniors from this yearâs championship team, with just Amanda Muse and UCLAâs freshman class remaining on the roster.
Deas seems like a fit for Closeâs program, putting up 1.5 steals per game even if she shot only 32% from the field and 25% from three. Arkansas went just 12-20 but Deas was an instant-starter for the Razorbacks, starting all 32 games this season.
UCLA has Michelle Betts, mother of Lauren and Sienna Betts, recruiting on Twitter for the program but Deas is the first official addition for the Bruins since winning the national championship on Sunday over South Carolina.
Weâll see in the coming days what else Close has planned to fill out next yearâs UCLA roster.
