As many Boston Red Sox fans are well aware, the team is not off to a good start this year. The Red Sox opened the season 4-8, losing three of their first four series and quickly falling to last place in the AL East.
Boston fans are notoriously impatient, especially this time of year when Fenway Park is often cold and gray. They're not having much fun at the ballpark or liking what they're seeing these days, and they've been quick to boo the players and criticize Red Sox leadership for the team's poor performance so far.
During his appearance on WEEI on Thursday, Craig Breslow said he understands the fans' frustrations and shares their disappointment with Boston's slow start.
"Our fans are passionate. They have expectations for this team, for the organization. We have the same expectations. We want to live up to those," Breslow acknowledged. "The way that we were playing to start the season, it didn't warrant a ton of excitement and cheers. And that's okay. It's on us to turn it around."
Breslow's in his third year as Chief Baseball Officer and spent 12 seasons as a Major League pitcher, including five for the Red Sox, so he knows how passionate Boston fans are about the team. He experienced the highs and the lows with them from 2012 to 2015, winning a World Series while also enduring three last-place finishes.
Red Sox fans expect a lot from their team, and what they've seen so far hasn't been good enough. Breslow gets that and knows the club needs to play better if it wants to start turning those boos into cheers.
