From collapse to contender: Texas A&M baseball's 2026 surge

Just a year ago, the Texas A&M baseball program was struggling to find its footing after being swept by Missouri, Vanderbilt and Texas.

Fast forward to year two of Michael Earley's tenure as the head coach — the Aggies are coming off one of their most massive series wins in recent memory and boast a 7-1 record against the Tigers, Commodores and Longhorns. Texas A&M scored 20 runs through two games against No. 2 Texas to secure a series victory and improve to 27-7 (9-5 in SEC play) thus far. With 15 league matchups remaining on the docket, the Maroon and White are in second place in the conference standings, after being picked to finish 13th in the preseason coaches poll.

While inclement weather prevented Texas A&M from having the opportunity to sweep the Longhorns, it was anything but doom or gloom for the Aggies in Bryan-College Station this weekend.

There were many doubts about Earley after being the unanimous preseason No. 1 college baseball program in 2025 and finishing the campaign without a postseason appearance for the first time since 2021 under Rob Childress. Earley has left no doubt about his skills as a head coach or his potential to lead Texas A&M to success this year, however.

The string of impressive wins in conference play is due in large part to the Aggies' success at the plate. Texas A&M ranks third in the SEC with a .317 team batting average and 70 home runs, while ranking second with 307 RBI so far in 2026.

Earley's club is riding back-to-back wins over the No. 2 team in the country into the second week of April with a midweek contest against Houston slated for Tuesday and the series opener at Alex Box Stadium against LSU on Friday.

The Aggies surged up to No. 10 in the D1Baseball Top 25 after the win over Texas, but there are still many difficult challenges ahead on the schedule. Through the remainder of the regular season, they will compete at No. 20 Florida and No. 25 Ole Miss, while also hosting No. 13 Auburn and No. 17 Mississippi State.

If Texas A&M can get more solid outings from the pitching rotation, like Aiden Sims and Gavin Lyons' impressive performance in Game 2 against the Longhorns, the Aggies have everything in front of them. That includes an opportunity to win the SEC and potentially host postseason baseball at Blue Bell Park.
