Amid ongoing uncertainty at Liverpool, the Anfield Index Media Matters podcast provided a more encouraging update regarding Ibrahima Konate and his contract situation. With his current deal set to expire in June, questions have lingered over his long term future, yet there are signs of progress.
David Lynch revealed a positive shift in negotiations, stating, “it’s my understanding they are getting closer now”. He added that “there’s optimism on both sides I would say that we’ll get done”, suggesting a potential breakthrough may not be far away.
For a club facing broader structural concerns, securing Konate’s future could represent an important step towards stability.
Konate’s individual form this season has drawn scrutiny, but Lynch was keen to place that within the bigger picture. “I think we can all acknowledge it hasn’t been very good,” he admitted, before challenging the idea that the issue lies solely with the player.
“If this is the best we can get out of Konate, then that’s really worrying,” he explained, pointing to a wider pattern affecting multiple players. The implication is clear, Liverpool’s system and coaching environment may be limiting performance levels across the squad.
Lynch expanded on this, noting that “so many players have looked limited this season that you just have to think that there’s probably something bigger going on there”.
Despite recent struggles, Lynch strongly backed Konate’s pedigree and long term value. “He’s had four really good seasons for Liverpool prior to that,” he said, highlighting his role in major successes, including a title win and a period competing on multiple fronts.
“He’s a very very good player,” Lynch added, reinforcing the belief that current performances do not reflect his true level. This perspective aligns with Liverpool’s apparent desire to retain him during a period of transition.
The importance of context was again emphasised, with Lynch suggesting that under improved conditions, Konate could quickly return to form.

Looking ahead, Lynch hinted that Konate’s performances could improve significantly with structural adjustments. He pointed to the need for “a better setup that protects the centre halves way better”, suggesting tactical changes could be key.
He also raised concerns about how defensive players are being exposed, noting a system “that doesn’t make Virgil van Dijk even look daft”. This underlines the extent of the defensive issues currently affecting Liverpool.
Ultimately, tying Konate down to a new deal could prove crucial. As Lynch put it, “to tie him down for his peak years… I think would be massive”. With optimism growing in negotiations, Liverpool now have an opportunity to secure one of their key defenders and provide a rare positive note in an otherwise challenging period.
