The Dallas Cowboys are prioritizing their pass defense in the 2026 NFL draft, focusing on needs for edge rusher, nickel cornerback, and linebacker. With only DeMarvion Overshown as a proven linebacker, the team aims to strengthen its defense against passing plays under new coordinator Christian Parker.
The Dallas Cowboys need a run stopping linebacker; that much is undebatable. With DeMarvion Overshown as the only proven linebacker option on the roster, the Cowboys probably need more than one. But for as important as a run-stopping linebacker might be, the most important area of the team the Cowboys have to address is their defense on obvious passing downs. With needs at edge rusher, nickel cornerback, and nickel linebacker, the 2026 NFL draft offers a variety of defensive options for Dallas.
Even though the running game has made a resurgence in recent seasons, the passing game is still king in the NFL. On average, passing delivers higher success rates, expected points added and yardage totals than rushing. Itâs why defenses predominantly live in nickel personnel and why pay structures favor skillsets focused on passing and stopping the pass.
Under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, the Cowboys are moving to a base 3-4 look, but itâs nickel personnel theyâre expected to field most frequently. Nickel, which swaps out a linebacker for an extra defensive back, is understandably better equipped to stop the pass.
On obvious passing downs when offenses typically shift to 11 personnel (three receivers), nickel matches defensive backs with receivers in a tit-for-tat sort of way. Even against different offensive packages, defenses have found that matching defensive personnel with down-and-distance is a winning formula since down-and-distance often dictates offensive intensions.
Even if a team is in 12 personnel (two tight ends), if itâs 3rd-and-7, theyâre probably passing. Itâs all about stopping offenses on obvious passing downs and Parkerâs Cowboys are not yet ready for that challenge in 2026.
Clearly, the Cowboys need a pressure player on the edge. Itâs been the topic of conversation throughout the offseason and has been an ongoing focus in trade speculation and scouting going into the draft. Adding a well-rounded linebacker is another must, because as much as a run-stopping thumper is needed, Parker does not want to field a coverage liability anywhere in his back-seven.
Flying somewhat under the radar is the Cowboys' need at nickel cornerback. The Cowboys added a handful of cornerbacks over the offseason but lack a true nickel man whoâs at his best inside. Jalen Thompson, a free agent safety addition, is a viable option inside on early downs, but heâs not an ideal choice on obvious passing downs like 3rd-and-long.
Games are won and lost in obvious late-down situations, be it short yardage or obvious passing downs, and stopping these obvious intentions are paramount for any defense. The Cowboys have done a decent job adding bulk to stop short-yardage running situations, but have yet to add the pieces required to stop obvious passing situations.
Adding a pressure player to the edge, and a nickel cornerback for the inside, are the best ways the Cowboys go about fixing this issue. That doesnât mean they need to invest their top two draft picks on both positions â it also doesnât NOT mean it â but fixing the holes on obvious passing downs has to be Dallasâ top priority going into the draft.
