Red Sox Has 'Strong Interest' In $126 Million All-Star Infielder

The Boston Red Sox lost a superstar infielder this past offseason in Alex Bregman.

In the immediate aftermath of the club losing Bregman, a handful of different infielders were linked to Boston. That was especially the case in the trade market with guys like Isaac Paredes, Ketel Marte, Brendan Donovan and Nico Hoerner, among others. Free agency was another avenue the club could've taken. Eugenio Suárez was a slugger linked to Boston. Another who was tied to the Red Sox at one point was former Toronto Blue Jays All-Star Bo Bichette.

Bichette ultimately landed a three-year, $126 million deal with the New York Mets. On Thursday, FanSided'sRobert Murray weighed in on various questions around the league. One was whether he is concerned about Boston's slow start. In the process, he dropped a nugget that there was "strong interest" from Boston in Bichette, despite the fact that a deal didn't get done.

"Right now, no. But the Red Sox’s slow start underscores a problem that I had throughout the winter," Murray wrote. "Even after trading Rafael Devers, and saving almost $300 million, the team did not re-sign Alex Bregman. They had strong interest in Bo Bichette, but did not sign the star infielder. They didn’t sign Kyle Schwarber. Instead, they ended up with Willson Contreras, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Caleb Durbin. Things will get better – their pitching raises their floor – but I’m just not sure how high their ceiling is."

Bichette didn't come to town. Boston eventually landed Caleb Durbin in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. Bichette would have been an intriguing addition, but things just didn't work out.
