Jordy Frahm of the Huskers was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after an impressive performance against Rutgers, achieving two wins and a save without allowing any runs. She also contributed offensively with 7 hits and 7 runs over the weekend.
The Huskers’ Jordy Frahm earned the latest Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors as was announced by the conference on Monday after she appeared in all three games against Rutgers earning two wins and a save.
She threw 9 total innings without allowing a single run, earned or otherwise. Across that stretch, she gave up only 5 hits and a single walk while striking out 17. This gave her a WHIP (Walks+Hits allowed per inning) of 0.667 to go with her weekend ERA of 0.00. She threw a 5-inning shutout in Friday’s 8-0 run-rule victory, came on in the the 7th inning for her school-record 9th save in Saturday’s 5-3 win, and pitched 3 perfect innings finishing Sunday’s 11-5 victory for another “W”.
Offensively, though she received no official credit for it, Frahm logged 7 hits and 7 runs, batting .583 with an on-base% of .688 (drawing 4 walks) with a double, 2 triples and a home run.
This is Frahm’s second Big Ten Pitcher of the Week award, and the fourth such honor for the team this season.
The Huskers begin a two-weekend road trip away from Lincoln after beginning the conference slate with three home-stands in the first four series.
They travel first to Wisconsin to take on the 22-12 Badgers who are currently the highest-ranked opponent remaining on the regular season schedule with an RPI of #36, although that ranking is a bit of a head scratcher. I’m sure the formula is correct, but it may be weighted by their 3-game series loss vs. UCLA. They have yet to beat a ranked team (0-6) and their most notable series victory is against Purdue, a respectable #35. The rest of their wins are the epitome of unimpressive. (CLICK HERE to see.)
My final thought on the matter? Who cares, man? We need the remaining teams to be ranked as highly as possible.
I’ve decided just to do these here instead of in the game recaps. I struggle enough to finish those recaps in a timely manner (quick publishing vs. a complete recap which tells the story – I’m getting more balanced, but I still lean toward a more-in-depth recapping), and sliding in the POTG was only adding to that time constraint. After literally having to climb out of a locked stadium for the second time this season, I’ve landed on this.
Game 1 – Alexis Jensen – Jensen entered the game in the 4th inning to a 2-2 tie with Creighton and simply shut the door until the Husker bats awakened late. In her 4 innings of work, she only allowed one runner to reach base surrendering only that hit while striking out 7.
Game 2 – Jordy Frahm – She did her two-way player thing in style by first tossing the shutout mentioned above in the 8-0 run-rule victory. At the plate she went 1-for-2, knocking in a pair, scoring 2 herself and smacking the game’s only home run.
Game 3 – The Hannahs! – In much closer than expected contests, the award was split between two highlight-reel moments from Hannah Coor, who stole a home run with a leaping grab, and Hannah Camenzind who tagged the Big Red “N” on the Gordon Complex with a blast which had everyone looking for a replay. CLICK HERE for Saturday’s recap if you want to watch video of them both again.
Game 4 – Jordy Frahm – Jordy’s two-way ability earned her a second POTG this weekend. First, much like Jensen above, she entered a tight game – Rutgers just kept chipping away after the Huskers took a 7-2 1st inning lead – and shut things down emphatically. She earned her second win throwing 3 perfect innings and striking out 6. At the plate, she was 3-for-4 with 2 triples and added a walk and 2 runs scored.
She would never toot her own horn about it, but Sunday’s win was the 1200th of Coach Rhonda Revelle’s career. And she shows zero signs of slowing down.
Natalia Hill made yet another diving catch in the 7th inning of Sunday’s win. She broke immediately on a sinking, screaming liner to left and got the glove just under it. It is her fourth or fifth such grab this season to go with a stolen home run of her own.
Unsurprisingly, Hill said, “Defense is the most fun part of the game. (Sorry, Coach (Diane) Miller, our hitting coach.)” Like several on the team, she has an infectious smile to go with that glove.
Fans watching the Creighton game may have seen Jesse Farrell turn an ankle and leave the game in the bottom of the 6th. She attempted to tape and play through it against Rutgers by playing but not hitting in Game 1, sitting out Game 2, and then leaving and re-entering in the final game. She was 0-for-6 at the plate but expect that to improve in Madison with most of five days to recover.
Finally, I became a doggo grandpa during the Rutgers series when Mylie and Connor adopted this little chewing machine Saturday. And, yes, I was headed to their house as soon as the recap was published.
