UCLA baseball achieved a program-record 24-game winning streak after defeating Cal State Fullerton 7-3. The Bruins dominated the game, allowing the Titans to score only three runs, all from one pitcher.
The No. 1 UCLA baseball team continued to slice through their competition with Cal State Fullerton facing their second loss to the Bruins this season in a 7-3 outing at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, Calif. on Tuesday. The win pushed UCLA's winning streak to 24 games, a program record.
Last time UCLA played the Titans, Cal State Fullerton took the Bruins to an extra inning, but fell 4-3. This time around, UCLA left no doubt as they held the Titans scoreless in eight of their nine innings with all three runs coming off of freshman right-handed pitcher Angel Cervantes. UCLA kept the freshman on the mound for the first three innings and brought in five pitchers from the bullpen to finish out the game.
UCLA got on the board first with a booming swing from star junior infielder Roch Cholowsky sending the ball to left field for the Bruins first home run of the game in the top of the first.
Two hits in the top of the second would eventually lead to UCLA getting another runner across home plate on a throwing error, but the defensive unit was not able to stop the Titan's fury. Cal State Fullerton's batters made contact four times and had three of their runners touch home plate to put them up 3-2 entering the third.
After a scoreless third for both teams, UCLA's bats ignited as they sent the ball flying all over the yard with five hits leading to three runs and putting the Bruins back on top 5-3.
The Bruins were unable to get any of their runners to make it home in the next four innings, but UCLA's bullpen remained dominant. They held the Titans to four hits and no runs to keep the Bruins up by two runs entering the ninth.
UCLA ended the game with Cholowsky hitting his second home run of the game, but this time it was a two-run homer to left center in the top of the ninth.
The Bruins will head to Piscataway, N.J. to open their series against Rutgers at Bainton Field on Friday with an anticipated start time of 3 p.m. PT.
