Why Brebeuf Jesuit's Parker Maiers flipped from Dartmouth to Northwestern

Brebeuf Jesuit football star Parker Maiers was locked in on playing for Dartmouth College before Northwestern came calling.

About a month ago, Maiers received the news that a roster spot at Northwestern became available after the transfer portal closed.

His mom beamed with excitement. Joy lit up on Maiers' face.

It was a moment to remember.

Maiers, one of the top linebackers in the state, was offered a preferred walk-on spot at the Division I level. About two weeks ago, he was accepted into Northwestern, which made his commitment flip official.

“I had a huge smile on my face and couldn’t wait to go visit and make sure it was right for me,” Maiers said. “It’s a closer school to home … Big Ten, obviously, one of the best conferences you can play in and still wonderful academics. Just was a great fit for my family and I.”

Brebeuf Jesuit’s Parker Maiers announced his commitment flip from Darthmouth College to Northwestern as a preferred walk-on on April 2.

Maiers had a breakout sophomore season when he totaled a career-best 152 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He followed that production with 144 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Last fall, he tallied 80 tackles and four tackles for loss as a senior.

A team leader in total tackles since the 2023 season, Maiers was a disrupter on the defensive end. A tackling machine that welcomed contact. A defensive enforcer that played from sideline to sideline. A dynamic player that opposing coaches had to circle on the gameplan.

Maiers built his name on physicality in the high school football stratosphere. The same intensity that Northwestern preached about its program. The team emphasis on versatility and technique made playing for the Wildcats even more appealing.

It turned out be a perfect match.

“When I was first up there, they broke things down into big steps and kind of unique ways to go about different techniques, which I felt was interesting,” Maiers said. “How they can break down tackling or getting off a pass block and I think will help a lot to get my technique as good as possible.”

The weekend after his commitment flip, Maiers visited a Northwestern practice at Evanston, Illinois. His eyes, which helped him track down opponents on the high school field, peered to the college field where he would soon don the school colors of purple and white.

“It was amazing to see, obviously, the speed of college ball,” Maiers said. “I’ve obviously been on tons and tons of visits but it’s great to be at such a great program and see the one that you’re going to be a part of.

“It’s a different vibe for sure, imagining yourself in these linebacker drills and walking yourself through that. I’m really excited for the intensity and the effort and the hard work they put in at practice.”
