With the second leg of its Champions League tie looming, Bayern Munich had to take a quick jaunt to Hamburg to square off with a desperate St. Pauli side.
It would be a very successful visit.
The Bavarians crushed St. Pauli 5-0 and set a new Bundesliga goal scoring record in the process. It was a terrific performance by a team that has been spectacular all season. Let’s get into it, here are some quick hitters on the match:
As always, let’s begin with a look at the starting XI:
There were seven lineup changes from the Real Madrid match, which somehow did not feel like enough. Kompany rolled the dice and started Manuel Neuer again (a risky proposition given his recent health), while Joshua Kimmich stayed in the lineup with Konrad Laimer and Michael Olise.
From an outsider’s perspective, it seemed like starting Jonas Urbig would have made sense, but hey…it is hard to argue with Kompany’s results.
Lennart Karl’s untimely injury probably cost him a start in this match.
St. Pauli came out with good energy at home as you would expect.
In the 9th minute, though, Bayern Munich would get on the scoreboard. Laimer lofted a diagonal cross toward the goal and Jamal Musiala ran perfectly into it and headed it by St. Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. It was a beautiful play!
Aside of just scoring, it was great to see Musiala confidently make that kind of run off-the-ball, toward the net. From a confidence and mindset standpoint, that probably was a massive boost for Musiala. The goal also tied the Bundesliga goal scoring record for the team at 101.
Musiala nearly broke the record in the 27th minute, but his shot hit the post!
Kim Min-jae was active early and looking good, which was great to see. Ditto for Joshua Kimmich. Both would finish with really great efforts.
All-in-all, it was a solid first half, but not spectacular by any means. Any time there is a heavy rotation, it takes time for the squad’s organization to fall into place, especially for some guys who have not played a lot of late. All that said, Bayern Munich dominated statistically:
It seemed as if Leon Goretzka had drawn a penalty early in the second half, but the contact in the box was deemed not enough to warrant that kind of call. It would have been a soft penalty, but it did seem like a penalty nonetheless.
The Bavarians would pull away in a hurry, though. A free kick from Joshua Kimmich was seemingly flicked away by a St. Pauli defender, but it landed on the foot of Goretzka for an excellent volley goal in the 53rd minute to make it 2-0 and set a new standard for Bundesliga scoring. The was Bayern Munich’s 102nd tally of the season. It was an incredible goal for Goretzka, who hammered home his shot with splendid accuracy.
A minute later, Michael Olise added another goal to make it 3-0. As they say, it was time to start the buses.
Kompany went to his bench after that to break up the workload for some of his regulars. Kimmich, Olise, and Laimer all exited in favor of Josip Stanišić, Luis Díaz, and Alphonso Davies.
The subbing was obviously key, but part of me still thinks that Davies will get the nod on Wednesday against Real Madrid.
In the 65th minute, Musiala slid a perfect pass into Nicolas Jackson, who — inexplicably — had a lot of room to operate in front the net. The Chelsea loanee buried his chance to make it 4-0 and the rout was fully on.
A few minutes later, Hiroki Itō motioned to his calf and had to be taken off. Hopefully, it was just a cramp.
In the 84th minute, Bara Sapoko Nidaye, who has been listed as injured by Transfermarkt for months, made his debut.
You could argue that the St. Pauli defense gave up long before this, but in the 88th minute Raphaël Guerreiro waltzed in toward the goal and ripped an uncontested shot into the net for a 5-0 lead.
It would be hard to find too much fault with anyone on Bayern Munich for this match. Just about every player had some sort of contribution to the victory. Even players who had some down moments early, rebounded nicely in the second half. As Ice Cube once said, “Today was a good day.”
In the 4th minute of added time, Tom Bischof, who had a terrific game, sent in a free kick that Goretzka was able to get a flick on for what looked like a goal…only it was called off — just in time to ruin Goretzka’s case for Meister of the Match.
Overall, this was almost as good a result as you could ask for — it was a comfortable win, no starters picked up injuries, and the Bavarians broke the Bundesliga goal scoring record. Now, the team can safely prepare for the Real Madrid match on Wednesday and put all of its focus on advancing to the UCL semifinals.

Bayern Munich could be looking at Hamburger SV’s Daniel Heuer Fernandes and FC Köln’s Marvin Schwäbe as options to back up Jonas Urbig next season if Manuel Neuer does not return:
✅ It is TRUE: Daniel Heuer Fernandes and Marvin Schwäbe are on the list at Bayern. We’ve also mentioned Oliver Baumann in the past, the German No.1 – he’s also on the list. Fernandes, of Hamburg, is a No.1. We heard there was contact with the player and Bayern asked whether he could imagine being at FC Bayern (albeit not in goal). This is an open question, but there is interest from both sides. So, he could be the No.2 behind Urbig. The other one, Schwäbe, was discussed at the club, but this could be a problem.
He’s playing for FC Köln, and, if you remember, this is the same club Jonas Urbig came from. Urbig started as the No.1 in the season but then at the end Marvin Schwäbe was in the goal and Urbig was on the bench. So it could be something of a problem to have both of these players in the same team. Jonas Urbig could have the feeling that there’s not a man behind him providing cover, but rather one who is a direct challenger. So, I don’t think Bayern will go for this
It is unclear if Sven Ulreich will return as well, but it does seem as if an exit for Neuer would prompt the Bavarians to add another experienced player for the goalkeeper position.
A few months ago, there was an oddball rumor linking Bayern Munich to Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, but the whispers died down pretty quickly. Now, transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri is saying that a potential deal is not dead:
🚨 EXCL – Bayern Munich have not ruled out a move for Anthony Gordon!
🔴⚪️ Bavarians already made contact with the player’s representatives.
🏴 The Englishman, inspired by the success of Michael Olise, is not closing the door…
❌⚫️⚪️ …As of now, Newcastle are not willing to consider a departure.
⏳ Wait&See… #mercato #NUFC
Bayern Munich has been rumored to want another option at left wing, but the 25-year-old, whose contract with the Magpies ends in 2030, could be too expensive for the Bavarians. Gordon has 17 goals and five assists in 45 games across all competitions this season.
Here is another rumor linking Bayern Munich to RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba:
✅ It is TRUE: Castello Lukeba is on the radar at Bayern Munich. There’s a connection with Max Eberl, who previously worked at RB Leipzig. He knows the player, as does Christoph Freund (who worked for Red Bull as well). However, he is expensive. You would make this deal in the event you had to replace Jonathan Tah or Dayot Upamecano, but at the moment, they have these two defenders, and he wouldn’t want to be a backup option. So, at the moment, this deal isn’t hot.
Lukeba has been very closely linked to Arsenal, which seems like it would be a logical move given his expected cost.
Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson is on his way to Tottenham Hotspur if the club is not relegated:
🚨🏴 Tottenham have a verbal agreement to sign Andy Robertson in June 2026, all terms in place.
Nothing signed/sealed yet as staying in Premier League will be a key factor ahead of proceeding.
Robertson, ready to pick #THFC project if relegation battle has positive outcome.
Juventus think that it will take a package of €40 million to get Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka as a free agent this summer, though the math does not totally add up:
According to Calciomercato, Juventus face direct competition from AC Milan and Inter Milan for the player’s signature. Interest across Serie A has grown due to his availability on a free transfer, and all three clubs are believed to see him as a valuable addition to their midfield options.
Juventus, in particular, are confident that it can still win the race for his signature. They believe his experience at the highest level and physical presence in midfield would significantly strengthen their squad, especially in European competitions where depth and quality are essential.
However, the financial demands surrounding the move could prove problematic. The midfielder is reportedly asking for around 7 million euros per season on a three-year contract, along with a signing-on bonus of approximately 10 million euros and additional fees. This would take the overall cost of the deal to around 40 million euros.
Juventus reportedly consider this figure too high for a free agent in his thirties, and this valuation is now a major obstacle in negotiations. As a result, the transfer is at risk of collapsing entirely, with Goretzka’s wage expectations believed to be beyond what Juventus are prepared to commit at this stage of the summer planning process.
Goretzka is looking at seeing his salary cut in half, but that might be about as good as he can get at this stage. The only way it could improve is if he gambles on himself and has a great World Cup performance (sketchy at best right now) to try and get a better offer.
