Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler was full of praise for defender Mats Wieffer this weekend. The 26-year-old full-back scored twice as Brighton beat Burnley 2-0 away from home, with Wieffer grabbing his first two goals of the season. As reported by VI, Hürzeler said ‘To me, he is currently one of the best Dutch players in the world, so I hope he gets a chance to go to the World Cup. He absolutely deserves it’.
Wieffer has won over 10 caps for the Dutch national team since making his debut in 2023. That was prior to when the defender joined Brighton. Wieffer came through at FC Twente, but struggled to break through into the first team. In 2020 he left to join Rotterdam based Excelsior on a free transfer. After impressing in 77 games for the side, he joined their city rivals Feyenoord in 2022. Wieffer played 79 games for Feyenoord before Brighton came calling in 2024. Since joining Brighton, Wieffer has played 52 games, scoring three goals and providing seven assists.
