Chennai Super Kings secured their first win of the IPL 2026 season, with Jamie Overton's impressive bowling performance of 4 for 18 being pivotal. His control and ability to dismiss key players helped CSK clinch the match against Delhi Capitals.
CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings’ first win of the season sparked debate over the ‘Player of the Match’ call. While Sanju Samson earned the award for his fluent unbeaten century, a strong case could be made for Jamie Overton, whose incisive spell proved decisive.

Overton’s 4 for 18 on a batting-friendly surface was, for many, the real difference. Hitting hard lengths and cleverly varying his pace, the English allrounder removed key batters including Sameer Rizvi, David Miller, Auqib Nabi and Tristan Stubbs. His control—an economy of 4.50 -- brought much-needed bite to a struggling attack. The standout moment came in the 19th over, when he dismissed Stubbs with Delhi Capitals needing 30 off 12 balls, effectively sealing the contest.
What made the spell more remarkable was the context. Just days earlier, Overton had gone for 42 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with Tim David taking him apart. The sharp turnaround underlined his resilience.
CSK bowling coach Eric Simons said resilience, along with the sense of security is what a bowler needs in modern T20 cricket to make a comeback.
“Resilience is perhaps one of the most important things you need to have and then it’s important for a team to give safety to bowlers in the modern game. That means you’re going to have bad performances, and it doesn’t make you a bad bowler.”
