Trevor Story has been the worst player in baseball this season.
At least by one measure, that's true for the Boston Red Sox veteran shortstop -- and that being true by any measure is one too many for the Red Sox.
It's in Win Probability Added in which Story is dead last in baseball:

That stat essentially measures how a given player performs in each game state. The higher-leverage moments impact WPA more than the less important spots.
The reality is that Story hasn't been good in any scenarios so far this season.
The 33-year old shortstop is batting .140, just 8-for-57. He has one home run and nine RBI.
He has struck out 20 times in 57 at bats, and his OPS is just .364. His OPS+ is 7, with 100 being the league average.
Story also leads the league with three errors made already in the field, a stat you don't want to lead the league in.

Boston only has so many choices, and really, Story is going to have to keep playing. They'll need to figure out how to wake Story's swing up a little bit.
If Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer both prove they belong, that could end up being the middle infield. Even then, new third baseman Caleb Durbin is struggling, too. The Red Sox might be one player short on the infield even in a decent outcome here.
But the truth is that they need Story to be better. He's not their best player, but he's still an important one toward determining their success.
