Bayern legend recalls previous nightmares vs Real Madrid: ‘Have already caused us enough headaches’

Former Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has issued a strong warning ahead of their decisive Champions League clash against Real Madrid, urging the German giants to stay grounded despite growing optimism.

With Bayern heading into the second leg at the Allianz Arena following a 1-2 win in Madrid, the tie remains delicately balanced. However, Rummenigge is wary of the mood building around the club.

Speaking to DAZN (h/t AS), the Bayern legend expressed concern about rising expectations within the club, stressing that facing Real Madrid requires complete focus and humility.

“We mustn’t make the mistake now of letting the euphoria get the better of us. At the moment, I sense a bit of a buzz and, quite frankly, I don’t like it.

“Real Madrid have already caused us enough headaches here in Munich, and I’d like to remind everyone of that,” he began.

Painful memories still fresh

To reinforce his point, Rummenigge revisited one of Bayern’s most painful nights against Madrid – the 2014 Champions League semi-final under Pep Guardiola.

Recalling that encounter, he said, “We lost the second leg then. Sergio Ramos scored two goals from set pieces within 15 minutes, and the match was practically decided.”

“Next Wednesday, we have to give our all again. Play with great concentration, with a lot of intelligence, and try to repeat what we showed on Tuesday,” he warned.

Lastly, Rummenigge also reserved special praise for Manuel Neuer, whose standout performance in the first leg kept Bayern firmly in the tie.

Reflecting on the goalkeeper’s impact, he said, “On Tuesday, there was a giant between the posts.”

“For me, Manuel Neuer is the most important signing of the last 15 to 20 years,” he concluded.
