Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane announced that Greg Rousseau will transition to a linebacker role in the team's new 3-4 defense under coordinator Jim Leonhard. Rousseau will play further outside as a 5-tech instead of closer to the middle.
The new defense the Buffalo Bills will run under the watch of coordinator Jim Leonhard will look different. That will cause some changes in personnel and new responsibilities for players already on the team.
In terms of the latter, edge defender Greg Rousseau is squarely in that area.
A defensive end in a 4-3 defense, in Leonhard's 3-4 front (three D-line, 4 LBs), where is Rousseau a fit? Speaking to The Athletic, general manager Brandon Beane has revealed the answer.
A linebacker position was the most-likely answer, getting down to specifics, the GM revealed Rousseau will take on a further outside positioning (5-tech) as opposed to a spot closer to the middle (4i-tech).
Beane's full breakdown on Rousseau can be found below:
âYeah, I think heâll be on the outside âbacker. Youâre not gonna see him dropping [into coverage] as much as you would some other guys. But he can still do it enough â he might do it one time a game. Could he go play the 4i? Yeah, he could. I donât know if youâre getting his value there, to be honest. It doesnât mean he couldnât do it. I think heâs versatile enough. Like anything, if we needed him to go do it, if these guys are like, âman, youâre the best guy,â Greg would. But we see him in the outside âbacker group, not that 3-4, 5-tech, 4i type stuff.â
