The Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers could be headed toward a brawl on Tuesday if Willson Contreras gets hit by a pitch. Tempers flared on Monday when Contreras was hit by Brandon Woodruff in the third inning.
Contreras and the Brewers have a long history, but it's not very pleasant. He has been hit by Brewers pitching 24 times in his career. Six of those pitches were thrown by Woodruff. Contreras took exception to the hit by pitch and issued a warning to Brewers players after the game.
âThey always say, âIâm not trying to hit you.â That gets old,â Contreras said. âSo next time they hit me again, Iâm going to take one of them out. Thatâs the message.â
Well, the man on the mound tonight for Milwaukee, Jacob Misiorowski, has already hit Contreras once in his career. Misiorowski is one of the hardest throwers in baseball, and Contreras has faced him five times. Misiorowski hit him in the side last September with a 101 mph fastball.
Contreras' younger brother, William Contreras, is the Brewers catcher, so he would actually be the first line of defense if Willson goes after Misiorowski. However, in an ideal world, the Brewers do not hit Contreras for the 25th time in his career.
Whether Monday night's hit by pitch was intentional or not is up for debate. Contreras gets habituated a lot. In fact, it's part of his game. However, the numbers do point to a pattern with the Brewers. If they want to intentionally throw at any player, the guy on the bump tonight would have the biggest impact. However, Contreras had a great game after he was plucked on Monday, so the Brewers may be wise to stay away.
