ESPN NFL insider Peter Schrager famously only makes two mock drafts every year: One with two weeks before the draft and one the week of the draft. According to him, he makes these predictions based on what he's heard from sources and now what he thinks each team should do at any given slot.
It's an inexact science considering the potential subterfuge from team sources, but it's at least a peek into the minds of top team officials with two weeks before all of the picks start coming in. Schrager only did the first round, and he predicted the San Francisco 49ers would take Utah offensive tackle Caleb Lomu with the No. 27 pick.
San Francisco's offensive line could be in flux if things don't get cleared up with Trent Williams' contract. And to be honest, even if the Niners and Williams work out his deal, the team still has to be thinking about the future; Williams will be 38 years old next season. Lomu played left tackle for the Utes last season, and although his game is still a work in progress, he's worthy of a first-round grade. He didn't allow any sacks in 2025.
This isn't the first time Lomu has been mocked to the 49ers, and it likely won't be the last in the waning weeks of draft season. The 6-foot-6, 313-pounder has started for the Utes over the past two years and is one of the favorite prospects at the position in the draft.
As Schraged explained, the 49ers need to start thinking about the future of their offensive line. Williams' future is in flux and his older now, so any opportunity to add a developmental young tackle should be heavily considered and weighed against other positions.
