The New York Giants and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence may be inching closer to a stunning breakup.
On Monday, Giants general manager Joe Schoen said that he had good conversations with Lawrence's agent over the last week and wants to get something done with his star defender.
However, new rumors signal that Lawrence's time in New York could be coming to an end soon.
On Monday night, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Lawrence and the Giants had reached an impasse on a new deal, and that New York has begun engaging with teams about a possible trade.
"The #Giants and star DL Dexter Lawrence, who have been talking about a new big-money extension, have reached an impasse, sources say," Rapoport said on X. "The Giants have engaged with teams on a potential trade and that will continue. It should come to a head before the Draft."
However, Pat Leonard of NY Daily News Sports says the situation is more dire. According to Leonard, talks have broken off between Lawrence and the Giants, and there is a ton of interest around the league for the multiple-time defensive tackle.
"The contract negotiations between the team and Lawrenceâs camp have 'broken off,' sources tell the Daily News," Leonard wrote. "These developments make clear that it is a real possibility the Giants will trade Lawrence."
Leonard added that Lawrence's discontent with New York in contract negotiations had been building for a while before his trade request on April 6.
"This situation did not escalate rapidly in just the past week. Lawrenceâs discontent has been simmering to a boil for a while."
Despite a down year with just 0.5 sacks, Lawrence is still one of the best defensive tackles in football, and nearly every franchise would love to acquire him.
However, the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders, and Chicago Bears are among the most logical landing spots for the Clemson product. All four squads have holes on the interior of their defensive lines, and Lawrence could step right in and fill them.
We'll see how this situation ends, but it sounds like the possibility of Lawrence wearing a new uniform in 2026 is higher than initially expected.
