One of the best young prospects in hockey has officially arrived in Boston.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Bruins announced that James Hagens, the No. 7 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, had signed a three-year deal with the franchise. The 19-year-old is making the jump to the NHL after a dominant sophomore campaign at Boston College in which he totaled 47 points (23 goals, 24 assists) in just 34 games.
Hagens spent the last two weeks with the Providence Bruins, recording a goal and three assists in six AHL appearances. For a slumping Bruins squad looking to inject some energy into the locker room, Hagens' presence could provide a significant boost down the stretch.
Here's what Hagens can bring to Boston ahead of the 2026 NHL Playoffs.
When Hagens makes his NHL debut, the Bruins will be getting one of the most electric prospects they've had in recent memory. He has made it clear that he can be an impact player against NCAA and AHL opponents, giving Boston the confidence to add him to the main roster.
Hagens' 2025-26 campaign at Boston College showcased a player who had completely outgrown the collegiate level. By tallying 23 goals in 34 games as a sophomore after scoring just 11 goals in 37 games as a freshman, he proved that he had added a lethal finishing touch to his world-class vision.
His transition to Providence for a brief six-game stint only reinforced what many evaluators had already been saying about him. Hagens quickly adjusted to the tighter spacing and increased physicality of professional hockey.
He could be particularly effective for the Bruins on the power play, whether he is carrying the puck into the offensive zone or preparing to rip a one-timer past the goaltender.
Bruins coach Marco Sturm told reporters that Hagens will not suit up against the Lightning on Saturday afternoon, saying that he needs "time to get used to our system."
"I really want him to play," Sturm said. "I gotta feel comfortable doing that. Like I said, I'm trying to do the best I can to make the right decision for this team, first of all, for this organization, and, of course, for James.
"I do want him to play. That's why I'm just gonna take it day by day."
Boston will travel to Columbus for a road game on Sunday, then return to the TD Garden for the regular season finale against New Jersey on Tuesday.
