Jason Day has issued his verdict on Cameron Smith after the Australian missed his sixth cut in a row at a major championship with his early exit from The Masters.
Smith had knocked on the door on several occasions at Augusta National over the course of his career. He had finished in the top 10 on five occasions â more than he had in the other three majors combined.
Unfortunately, he will not be adding to that run this time around.
The LIV Golf star missed the cut at The Masters after finishing his second round at seven over par for the tournament.
It continues a worrying trend for the Ripper GC captain. Smith has now missed his last six cuts in the major championships, with the 2024 US Open representing the last time that he played on the weekend.
Smith was the only player to miss the cut in all four majors in 2025. So he would have been desperate to prove a point and look much more like the player who clinched The Open Championship nearly four years ago.

Speaking after his own second round, Jason Day insisted that Smith has the talent to bounce back.
âCammy, heâs such a good golfer. The guy won the British Open, won The Players. He was I think at a high of number two in the world. Heâs an unreal golfer. He has a tremendous short game and really good wedge game,â he said.
âSo itâs unfortunate this golf course actually should suit him really well just of how good his game is. Heâs a great putter, too.
âI think he might be going through a bit of a tough run right now, especially during the majors, because thatâs hard to miss all of last yearâs majors.â
Every LIV player is under the microscope at the majors. Whether it is fair or not, there is a narrative that LIV does not properly prepare players for the biggest events of the season.
Smith struggling again, along with Bryson DeChambeau missing the cut, does nothing for that perception.
Day explained what Smith should attempt to do to try and turn his fortunes around in the near future.
âHe could win the next major and weâre not thinking about it again. Heâs just got to try and take the positives from what heâs got. Itâs so easy for me to say because Iâm on the other side of it. Iâm playing really good golf right now,â he said.
âBut when youâre going through it it feels like youâre so far away. But if you can try and find the positives and try and latch onto it instead of thinking about the negatives and just really be patient with yourself and just try and work at it. Because heâs a really talented golfer and obviously heâs won big events. Especially around the world on both tours, PGA Tour, LIV tour, majors, whatnot.
âItâs unfortunate to see that and obviously to hear that. Heâs been a good buddy of mine for a long time.â
Smithâs plight certainly does not help LIV. As Day noted, he was one of the very best players in the world when he decided to jump ship from the PGA Tour.
He has not won a professional event since 2023. For a player of his talent, that is simply not good enough.
