CBS Sports' latest NFL mock draft features surprises in the top 10, with the Washington Commanders staying at No. 7 and selecting Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. The Las Vegas Raiders picked Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, while the Commanders did not trade down despite lacking second and fourth-round picks.
CBS Sports revealed a new mock draft on Saturday, which included some surprises in the top 10.
The Washington Commanders, in this latest mock draft by Jordan Dajani, stayed put at No. 7, not trading down as some are beginning to consider a real possibility, given they don't have a pick in the second or fourth rounds.
What was no surprise was the Las Vegas Raiders' selection of Heisman Trophy winner and National Champion Fernando Mendoza of Indiana. Dajani, in his introduction to Saturday's mock draft, admits he wanted to be a little different, but also said he was still obligating himself to remain logical in how he thought about his top 10 in this draft.
Okay, seeing Commanders fans reading this, want to know who the Commanders selected in Dajani's mock? Let's reveal that, then we can go to Dajani's logic for whom he selected in picks 2-6. This will reveal who was off the board and who was still available for the Commanders at No. 7. With the seventh pick, Dajani 'logically' felt, considering who was still on the board, the Commanders would take Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. So, how did Love fall to the Commanders in this mock draft?
With the second selection, the New York Jets grabbed Ohio State edge, Arvell Reese. At 6-4, 243, Reese is likely going to be used as an OLB if they are in a 4-3 or 3-4. There has been talk that under new DC Brian Duker, the Jets will use both alignments rather than sticking with either.
David Bailey was tied at the very top for the most sacks (14.5). Just behind, he accomplished the second-most pressures (81) in the FBS last season. If he wasn't sacking the QB, he was the best at getting there with his 38 QB hits, the most. Thus, in this mock, he is chosen third by the Arizona Cardinals.
Titans coach Robert Saleh grabs Ohio State stud linebacker Sonny Styles at No. 4. The thinking here is that Styles will be Saleh's new Fred Warner. The Titans need a linebacker; this is a 'logical' selection according to Dajani.
No. 5 found the New York Giants selecting the top corner of this class, Mansoor Delane from LSU. This would prevent the Commanders from seizing Delane, in hopes of pairing Delane and Trey Amos together for the next several years as starting corners.
Francis Mauigoa (Miami) is a beast at 6-6, 329 pounds, and the Browns, according to Dajani, will not be able to pass him up at No. 6. The Browns need help on offense at quarterback, receiver, and offensive line; can't go wrong with this selection. So, this means that in this scenario, the Commanders would be on the clock with RB Jeremiyah Love, WR Carnell Tate, S Caleb Downs, CB Jermod McCoy, and DE Rueben Bain, Jr., all still on the board and available to Washington GM Adam Peters.
The draft's first round will be Thursday, April 23 and broadcast live by ESPN, ABC and NFL Network.
