It's been a rough start to the week for the Boston Red Sox.
Coming off back-to-back series wins, the Red Sox have seen that momentum evaporate over the last two nights at Target Field. The Twins crushed them 13-6 on Monday and 6-0 on Tuesday, beating Boston's top two starting pitchers, Garrett Crochet and Sonny Gray, in the process.
Worse, Crochet and Gray combined for just 5 2/3 innings, leaving the Red Sox's bullpen shorthanded ahead of Wednesday's series finale.
Despite the disappointing turn of events, Alex Cora is trying to stay optimistic after Boston's back-to-back ugly losses.
"Show up tomorrow, win a game, and it's a .500 trip and then go home," Cora said after Tuesday's defeat. "That's the way you gotta see it. There's no other way. Obviously, we lost the series, but tomorrow we win, it's a 3-3 road trip, and then you go home and play better."
The Red Sox have struggled on the road to start the year, going 3-8 and losing three of their first four series away from Fenway Park. They've been a bit better at home, going 3-3 in their only homestand of the season so far.
Boston will try to salvage Wednesday's series finale and end its rollercoaster road trip on a high note behind Connely Early this afternoon. The rookie southpaw has opened the year with three straight no-decisions but has pitched well with a 2.63 ERA, so he'll try to get his first win of the season.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox's bats will try to bounce back against Simeon Woods Richardson, who's 0-2 with a 4.60 ERA in three starts this season.
