The New Orleans Saints are showing significant interest in Nebraska safety DeShon Singleton as they seek to bolster their defensive backfield. Singleton, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound player, recorded impressive athletic metrics, including a 40-yard dash time of 4.52 to 4.55 seconds.
Defensive backs are the forefront of the NFL's focus in recent memory, as teams look to overload their cornerback and safety rooms with talent, hoping they can find the next big thing at either position. Both there and at wide receiver, it is better to have significantly more talent than one would expect, as injuries are immensely common and knock out the starters sooner rather than later, unfortunately.
This will be a point of discussion for the New Orleans Saints, who have lost three starting cornerbacks and two safeties in the last two seasons, including Tyrann Mathieu, Will Harris, Alontae Taylor, Marshon Lattimore, and Paulson Adebo. They have decided to go younger at the position, focusing on Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley for the future, but they desperately need another option in the room to pair with them.
A name who they may be interested in is Nebraska safety DeShon Singleton, with Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports reporting the Saints have shown "a lot" of interest in him, among a few other teams.
"Safety DeShon Singleton timed the 40 anywhere from 4.52 to 4.55 seconds after not running at the combine. He hit 39.5 inches in the vertical jump and 10-foot-10 in the broad jump. Singleton looked good in defensive back drills. A large defender at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Singleton is being looked at solely as a zone or strong safety by the league, with no talk of bulking him up to play linebacker, something he initially told me at the combine."
"The Cincinnati Bengals, New Orleans Saints, and Tennessee Titans have shown a lot of interest in Singleton, who also participated in the Senior Bowl. The Titans are interesting, as new head coach Robert Saleh was with the New York Jets when they drafted Jamien Sherwood in 2021, a then-oversized safety from Auburn who has become an outstanding linebacker for the team."
Singleton had a highly productive 2025 season, as well as 2024. In 12 games this year, he put up 70 total tackles, 4 tackles for loss, a sack, 2 interceptions, 4 pass deflections, and a fumble recovery. He also tested out well in the two events he competed in at the combine, posting a 39.5-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-10 broad jump. Singleton is on the bigger side of safeties, coming in at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, and could be a very fascinating addition to this Saints defensive backs room, potentially as a box safety.
