Kamden Lopati, a four-star quarterback target for Notre Dame, has decommitted from the University of Illinois. The Utah native's decision follows his absence during a recent recruiting event hosted by Illinois.
The first step of Notre Dame possibly locking up their quarterback of the future occurred on Monday.
Kamden Lopati, the four-star 247Sports Composite 2027 quarterback announced that he had decommitted from the University of Illinois on Monday afternoon. The Utah native had committed to the Illini last July, but his lack of appearance this past weekend when the Illini hosted potential recruits may have been a signal that he was going to go in a different direction.
Lopatiâs blend of arm strength and mobility makes him a natural fit for modern spread offenses. Heâs known for his confident downfield passing and ability to extend plays outside the pocket, earning comparisons to recent Power Five starters with similar skill sets. His junior season at Mater Dei High School featured more than 2,500-passing yards and 28-touchdowns, along with nearly 700-yards rushing.
Both Notre Dame and Michigan hosted Lopati for unofficial visits in March, each offering him the chance to work directly with offensive coordinators and quarterback coaches.
Notre Dame remains one of the favorites in Lopatiâs recruitment, with the Irish prioritizing quarterback depth in their 2026 class. The staff has impressed Lopati with its offensive development track record and emphasis on academics. It should also be noted that Kamden called Notre Dame his "dream school."
Michigan also appears firmly in the mix, offering a similarly strong combination of tradition and system fit. Lopati is expected to announce his new commitment later this spring, with recruiting insiders pointing to Notre Dame and Michigan as the final contenders.
