NEW DELHI: Rajasthan Royals rode on a blistering opening stand from Yashasvi Jaiswal and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to beat Mumbai Indians by 27 runs in a rain-hit IPL clash in Guwahati on Tuesday.
In a match reduced to 11 overs per side after a delay of two hours and 40 minutes due to persistent rain, Rajasthan posted a commanding 150/3 before restricting Mumbai to 123/9 to register their third consecutive win of the season and climb to the top of the table.
Openers set the tone in powerplay blitz
Jaiswal came out all guns blazing, smashing four boundaries and a six in the very first over to lay the foundation. At the other end, 15-year-old Sooryavanshi showed no signs of nerves, announcing himself in style by hitting Jasprit Bumrah for a six off his very first ball.
The young left-hander continued his fearless approach, striking another six off Bumrah and taking the attack to all bowlers before holing out to Tilak Varma off Shardul Thakur after a stunning 39 off just 14 deliveries.
While Sooryavanshi provided the early fireworks, Jaiswal took charge thereafter, bringing up his second successive half-century in just 23 balls. The opener remained unbeaten on 77 off 32 balls, an innings studded with 10 fours and four sixes, as Rajasthan capitalised fully on the shortened format.
Bowlers seal the deal
Mumbaiâs chase never really got going after early setbacks. Ryan Rickelton fell in the opening over to Jofra Archer, setting the tone for a collapse. Nandre Burger then removed Suryakumar Yadav cheaply, while Sandeep Sharma trapped Rohit Sharma as Mumbai slumped to 22/3.
Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi dealt a decisive blow in a single over, dismissing captain Hardik Pandya for a duck and Tilak Varma for 14. With wickets falling at regular intervals, Mumbai failed to build any momentum in the chase.
Burger and Sandeep finished with two wickets apiece, ensuring Rajasthan stayed firmly in control throughout the innings.
The defeat marked Mumbaiâs second loss in three matches, while Rajasthan continued their perfect start to the campaign with three wins on the trot.
The action now moves from Guwahati to Delhi, where Delhi Capitals will take on Gujarat Titans in the 14th match of the season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.
