Goals from Jean Hugonet, Dariusz Stalmach and Baris Atik put Petrik Sander’s side firmly in control before Adrián Kaprálik grabbed a late consolation for the hosts in stoppage time.
With both teams still eager to pick up valuable points despite their differing circumstances, the opening stages developed into a tense and fiercely contested battle. However, while the intensity was evident, clear-cut opportunities were scarce as attacking quality was largely missing throughout the first half.
The breakthrough finally arrived five minutes before the interval and it came through Jean Hugonet. Kiel failed to fully deal with a corner, allowing Magdeburg to recycle possession into the box. Stalmach’s miscued effort fell kindly for the defender, who reacted quickest to stab home from close range and give the visitors a deserved 1-0 lead.
Magdeburg struck another huge blow deep into first-half stoppage time just as Kiel appeared set to head into the break only one goal behind. A quickly taken corner caught the home side off guard, with Alexander Nollenberger delivering an excellent cross onto the head of Stalmach, who powered past Timon Weiner to double the advantage.
The visitors continued their momentum after the restart and effectively killed the contest in the 56th minute. Baris Atik added Magdeburg’s third in unusual fashion as his dangerous corner delivery drifted through a crowded penalty area untouched before sneaking in at the near post to make it 3-0.
Kiel struggled to mount any meaningful response as Magdeburg controlled proceedings comfortably and managed the game with composure. The hosts did eventually find a late breakthrough in the 92nd minute when Alexander Bernhardsson won possession high up the pitch before squaring for Kaprálik, who calmly converted from close range, though it proved nothing more than a consolation.

The victory lifts Magdeburg up to 12th place for the time being, moving them five points clear of the relegation zone with survival now potentially within reach depending on other results this weekend. Kiel, meanwhile, suffer their first defeat in seven matches but can still take comfort from the fact their 2. Bundesliga status has already been secured.
